Volunteer Arms
Great choice of beers and gins, lovely atmosphere with space for our largish group and best of all no loud music so you could hear the entire table discussion, not just the person sitting opposite or next to you. Will definitely be visiting again on our next trip to York.

Fantastic pub! Excellently kept beer, great selection of cask ales and very friendly staff. Dog friendly too! (Pooches get a little treat if they are well behaved!) Couldn't recommend more highly. One of the best pubs I've ever visited!

Visited on a dead Monday night. Great cask ales and great yarn with locals including a fellow Aussie who has adopted this pub as his local. Would do the same if I lived there. Great friendly lady working behind the bar too.

Really nice pub. Cosy and friendly with a very decent range of beer. Hidden gem. Quiz on a Sunday is great fun.

Imho this is the best pub in York. I appreciate that is a bold claim but I can't fault this pub. The crystal palace around the corner has a a nicer interior. The brew York tap room has a better drinks selection. The volunteer arms though has the perfect balance of everything. The staff are very friendly. The beer is superbly kept. They have a very good selection of ales. The interior is comfortable and it's not too busy. It's similar to another great York pub, the Maltings, but for me the volunteer arms is just that bit better. A true hidden gem.
