The Edinburgh Pottery Studio

I have been taking lessons at the Edinburgh Pottery Studio since April 2022. My first course was hand building, and I now mostly do wheel work.The studio is a nice space over two floors. Upstairs is mostly for hand building, downstairs is for wheel throwing and glazing. There is a bathroom onsite.In the studio are two kilns, a wheel for each student to work on, an extensive selection of slips, underglazes, and dipping and brush on glazes as well as a wide variety of tools for hand building, texturing, painting, trimming, etc.Yvette is a very friendly person, easily approachable, and with impeccable taste in music.Classes are small (usually up to 8 students), and they are really good fun.Yvette is a patient teacher, generous with her time and knowledge. She teaches her students how to make ceramic objects, from clay wedging to glazing. Through a combination of hands on help and demonstrations, she makes sure her pupils understand and can execute the various techniques required to produce beautiful pieces.As the students progress, she keeps challenging them and proposing new and interesting things to do.She also encourages creativity and shares her enthusiasm for her student’s work by showcasing their work every week.She is always available for advice and honest feedback, which is priceless when one wants to progress.The studio is very clean and very safe. Yvette has an extremely good cleaning protocol (absolutely necessary when working with clay, for safety reasons) and she encourages her students to take responsibility for the workspace, which means that everyone can work in safe environment.As a side note, I would also add that Yvette is very inclusive of everyone. I am autistic and she has always made sure I felt at ease in the studio. She has always accommodated whatever needs I might have had.

I had two courses with Yvette at the Edinburgh Pottery Studio and I'd enjoyed it so much. She is an amazing teacher and very talented person! She is very helpful during the classes with everyone, she doesnt hesitate to go around students and show us how we could improve our practice. She has also an incredible patience and would come over if you have any questions, even if she already replied to it minutes beforehand...(sorry Yvette lol). Anyway, the courses are fab and therapeutic and I'd highly recommend anyone to give it a go :)

We had a fantastic weekend doing the beginner throwing summer workshop. Yvette's teaching was excellent, very welcoming and encouraging. We learned so much and can't recommend this course enough to anyone who wants to learn how to throw pottery!

We had the best introduction to pottery! Honestly can't wait to book a course in the new year :). Yvette is a lovely person and a wonderful teacher! We had a private introduction to wheel throwing and we absolutely love our bowls.

Had my second one to one lesson with Yvette and she is a fabulous teacher. Spots exactly what you could be doing wrong as you do it and corrects you in such a nice and informative manner. I would highly recommend Yvette to anyone considering pottery.

What a fun and great learning experience this was. Yvette is a fantastic tutor, so patient, relaxed and supportive and gives you lots of space to try things out yourself and gets to know you. She's clearly very experienced in ceramics, and in teaching. I was amazed at how much we managed to learn and do in 2 hours on the private wheel session we went on. We're loving the bowls we made, and so impressed with the glazing too. I have heard from others who attend the courses too how much they have loved the experience, and many who gone on to join other courses or attend the studio regularly to continue learning and making more. I've always had really positive communications throughout too, and would definitely recommend it to anyone, and really hope to go back to try it out more myself again soon.

I love my pottery classes! I can't believe the improvement each session under Yvette's patient and encouraging teaching. Ok, so I'll never be on Pottery Throwdown but pottery, and the classes, are fun and creative and I would encourage anyone to give it a try. It is so satisfying to see what you can accomplish. I have met so many lovely people who, like me enjoy the friendly and relaxed atmosphere Yvette has created. So don't just sit there....get potting!!

The studio has a great atmosphere and it is a lovely place place to learn and explore the endless possibilities of working with clay.Yvette is a supporting and experienced teacher with a wealth of knowledge on pottery.I have very much enjoyed the beginners and intermediate clases. I highly recommend the classes of ESP to everyone!

I've been taking classes with Yvette for just over a year and I absolutely love it! She is a fantastic teacher - thorough, clear, patient and enthusiastic. I look forward to class every week! It has been such a joy and I can't wait to continue on my learning journey!

This 5 week pottery throwing class has been superb, it's taken me to a different headspace, outside of the everyday humdrum. Yvette, who teaches the group, gives clear and instructive demonstrations and helps and advises you, just when you need it.I was impressed by the organised space and cleanliness of the workshop. I would certainly recommend this class to anyone who has ever wanted to learn to throw, or even give it a go just for fun.
