Handyside Bridge

This is a beautiful place and a useful place to cross the river on foot or bike.

Spans the river a treat. Nice old school industrial aesthetic. You could cross back and forth on this baby all day.

Grade II listed tied-arch single span former railway bridge constructed from riveted cast iron.It was designed by Richard Johnson, the chief engineer for Great Northern Railway and constructed in 1878 by Andrew Handyside and Company (hence it's name).Measuring 140ft (43m) and 16ft (4.9m) high it was designed to keep the river free from support piers and was tested to a weight of 432 tons.Now used as a foot bridge it was originally part of the Great Northern Railway Derbyshire Extension or Friargate Line, it closed in 1968.Definitely worth a closer look as it's quite an impressive piece of engineering.

Beautiful industrial former railway bridge. Really nice details of you're into that sort of thing!!

Its a nice bridge and must have plenty of history attached to it. Though there is more of a sombre feeling around it, as people have jumped from the bridge and not survived the fall into the murky water and tributes left attached to the fencing.

Nice to see a piece of history repurposed and put to good use. I think it was part of the Great Northern Railway

It's a bridge across the Derwent. Useful to get you to the other side.
