Hall of the Vicars Choral
Very interesting and historic ruin of understated significance. It is easy to walk past and ignore it, but do stop and take a closer look. There is an information board adjacent to the ruins that explains the site. But basically, the bulk of this now ruined College was built between 1383 and 1388 by Bishop Thomas de Brantingham, incorporating an even earlier mediaeval cluster of buildings, to accommodate the clergy who assisted in singing the daily cycle of choral offices at the Cathedral. The College was bombed in May 1942.
