Pheasant Inn
A true five star experience from start to finish. From the warm welcome and cosy atmosphere of the pub itself, to our thoughtfully designed and stylish room. Dinner and breakfast were both outstanding and we lazed away a whole rainy Saturday loafing in our enormous, comfy bed taking mental note of all the design inspo we can copy!! When we turned away housekeeping, she very thoughtfully brought us fresh milk for more tea, and the dining room staff gave a little tour of their chic private dining area - perfect for intimate get togethers. We’ll definitely return. Thank you!

Lovely spontaneous meal at The Pheasant which we have visited many times - lovely food and lovely service from our waitress Denisa who recommended a lovely Serbian Rose Wine which was delicious - the food was great too !

We had a late lunch here on a Saturday and it was a relaxing meal. We chose classic pub dishes, but should probably have chosen something more original as the dishes looked just a little tired. But it was perfectly ok, and the service was pleasant. The ownership has changed since we were here some years ago, now being run by Youngs (even though the pubsign outside still says Wadworth.) There is plenty of parking, so no need to block B4000.

Having known the Pheasant Inn for over fifty years I have seen it morph from a small pub which welcomed raucous Rugby teams to a friendly top grade pub and restaurant. Its developed continued through Covid but, sadly, its latest transformation has been for the worse. We were meeting a small group of friends who were travelling from various parts of the UK for lunch. Our last meeting had been over the Covid period and before the Pheasant was taken over by a brewery. I booked a table for 1230 and we were seated by 1240. The friendly front of house staff gave us menus and took our drinks order which arrived quickly they had taken our food order by 1250 and yet the first plates did not appear until 1.40; they didn’t all come at once, they came from the kitchen in dribs and drabs. The game pie was excellent but the vegetables (seasonal greens – which contained more carrot than greens) were over cooked and tasteless. The fishcakes were fine as was the Mac and Cheese. I looked across at what my wife had chosen and thought she must have selected a starter as there was a tiny portion on her plate. This turned out to be about two small spoonfuls of quinoa, a tiny amount of autumn squash and other root vegetables, a few splodges of aioli and the spinach dust was just about visible around the edge of the bowl. It was tasty but hardly enough for a main course especially at the ridiculous price of £18. Side dishes of seasonal greens were ordered but they arrived with no serving spoons. Salad was served with the Keyttle Moss minute steak so when we were asked if any sauces were needed French dressing was asked for. The waitress came back from the kitchen and said there wasn’t any. I then asked the lady, who seemed to be in charge, if we could have a bottle of oil and a bottle of vinegar so we could mix up our own dressing and, lo and behold, the kitchen magically mixed some oil and vinegar and put it in a small bowl; this had no lip or serving spoon which result in a mess on the table. The puddings were excellent though sadly once again standards have slipped and we had to ask for pudding forks as we were only given a spoon each.A 12.5% service charge was automatically added to the bill, if we hadn’t been with a group of friends I would have crossed this off and tipped the front of house staff. I find it sad that a British Brewery like Youngs has taken on the American habit of automatically adding a service charge – is it because they aren’t paying their staff an acceptable wage? This service charge was not clearly visible on the menu or on the on-line booking page. The Pheasant Inn used to be one of our regular meeting places. We will not be visiting again.

This is the third time I have booked the private dining room at The Pheasant for my family. It is a perfect place to meet. Everything was excellent and the staff were so friendly and helpful. We will be back!

I could make a rhyme up about pleasant pheasants, but I couldn’t do it justice. To say this was the tastiest bird I have ever consumed doesn’t go far enough. The food, atmosphere and friendly service was just perfect- even the taxidermy fix didn’t offend my city sensibilities (too many on my London st!)

Lovely building and atmosphere. However, we had reserved a table for three people at 2.30 but the table wasn’t ready so we were asked to wait at the bar. Several people who came in after us were seated, including a couple who hadn’t booked. After reminding a waitress we were shown to a table which wasn’t set and we were given the wrong menus. We were served by six different people and communication between them was nonexistent. The food was very good although desserts were limited as some items, like custard, had run out. This was a special meal for our daughter who was visiting us for the weekend but it didn’t meet our expectations. Hopefully we just caught it on a bad day.

Excellent beef roast - one of the best my husband has had in a long time…. Tender rare beef and delicious potatoes. And nice to still have it served on a Sunday evening!
