This is a fabulous way to develop your skills in oil painting. Guy Shoaham patiently takes you through theory into practice, and the ability to see more deeply. Guy has the skill and knowledge to encourage you to explore the juxtaposition of colour and context; and enjoy what you are doing!

I'm mid-way through my third term of Guy Shoham's Richmond School of Painting. I had no experience of drawing or painting prior to joining Guy's Saturday afternoon art classes. I would say I have no natural talent for art either, but that's completely irrelevant as Guy imparts real knowledge and technique that empower his students to make steady progress. I started with a few sessions drawing in charcoal, and then launched into painting with oils, with a gradually increasing pallet of colours and techniques. Guy explains exactly what materials to buy and where to buy them, but for the first few classes he provides all the materials himself. Just turn up. I'd say one of the things that distinguishes Guy as a great teacher is he's not a praise junkie". Mostly

I’m on my third term at the Richmond School of Painting and I continue to learn and improve my technique in every session. The classes are relaxed, interactive and inspiring.Guy always comes up with new and creative challenges but allows students to flourish at their own pace. He spends time with each of us, ensuring we have a good grasp of the basics - colours, materials, light and observation - and at the same time encourages experimentation and going out of our comfort zone.I feel really fortunate to have found this local art school in Richmond

I am on my second term at Guy Shoham's Richmond School of Painting and thoroughly enjoying it. As someone who had no prior experience of working with oil paints, I found Guy’s approach and structure to be effective in learning and applying new facets of knowledge about the medium. Guy has a unique way of guiding by asking questions & helping you understand what you could have done better. The students are a diverse, welcoming and supportive group; and make for good company over a cup of tea. The three hours that I spend every Saturday seem to fly by... And it's something I eagerly look forward to every week!

I have been attending art classes, tutored and untutored, most of my adult life. I have met many teachers over this time and most are lovely people and good artists to boot, though, other than in one or two cases, I have only now, at Richmond School of Painting, come across an excellent teacher and communicator in his profession.Guy may not always initially be full of direct praise but is a superb and attentive teacher and encourages in many different ways.Under his constant surveillance one learns all the important basics individually and as a group - tone, line, colour, perspective, approach etc.Additionally the classes I attend at the School are fun, with attendees varying in ability which is always a plus, whether ex art students or beginners.Guy is always vigilant, careful and alert to all one's indiviual artistic needs. A true professional!During lockdown we continued on zoom and also had a a weekly art history talk from him, relevant to our current group projects and indiviual needs.I am especially pleased now as my great passion is life and portraiture and that is what we are doing in the Wednesday evening group. If you are looking for a quality class, you won't find better than at Richmond School of Painting!Thank you Guy!Judie

I was looking forward to improve my art and found out about the Richmond School of Painting. It's so convenient for people who work all through the week to do something productive during the weekends, I can't wait to start the course during the summertime. Guy is very helpful and full of knowledge

I am in my first term of lessons with Guy. I have had no experience at all with drawing and painting and I found this class a good starting point .Guy provided us with detailed instructions on equipment and provided us the initial equipment needed when we started the classHe does not hover giving detailed instructions but rather lets you get on with it and provides feedback as required. It is a therapeutic 3 hour class .As others have mentioned in their reviews, Guy is not effusive with his praise so it’s great when he compliments you .

I joined a Beginner class with no prior experience at all. I really enjoy the sessions and three hours just fly by. And also with Guy’s great guidance I feel like I can draw things that would have seem completely impossible to me before. I really enjoy the atmosphere in the group that is very diverse and very supportive. So overall highly recommend the school.
