Very unique experience of driving along the causeway in the morning and seeing it submerged in the tide water in the afternoon.

We love going to this place. Please check the tides and plan your day. Depending on what your doing, you’ll need 1/2 or a full day. There is a big car park at the entrance to the main island (£8.00 for a day), and a small one towards the castle. The beach near the white pyramid is one of the best beaches around, it’s a decent 3/4 hour walk, but on a good days weather, it’s beautiful. You’ll see seals and birds of prey. The castle unfortunately (for us anyway) is more picturesque from the outside. The inside was quite expensive and really not very interesting. The views are superb though from every angle. The lime kilns are interesting, and free to have a wander. The Priory is stunning inside and out, you can walk around the Priory, but getting inside is run by English Heritage and costs about £9.00 per adult. The church is well worth a look inside, lots to see if you look.St Cuthberts island and surrounding beach is great for a nice walk. There is something on the island for everyone, kids, adults, oldies (I may qualify) but with good timing, it’s a great place to go, even in Spring,Autumn and especially Winter when it’s peacefully quiet.

We crossed the causeway by car but the day before we walked the Pilgrim's Path, barefoot across the estuary with a small group led by Ray Briggs. Aside from the novelty of walking through mud/sand/seaweed/pools... Ray gave an entertaining and interesting talk about Anglo Saxon kings, early Christianity, and viking raids. Good memories. Worth doing if you have the time.

Absolutely amazing! Told off by the coast guard very politely and fortunately they had no other incidents to attend to at the time... So... Do what the sign says and don't enter the causeway when there's water covering it. It's just as much fun as it dissipates and of course the salt water doesn't wreck your car! (Note: a week later I replaced my power steering pump pulley, which caused further issues to the tune of £300+)It was fun but it wasn't clever! Won't be doing it again! See pics (salt water very quickly drys out under engine components, causes rust and oxidation in a matter of days!... No good trying to wash it off when it's already got into your bearings, wheel axles, and engine bay pulleys etc.... Take heed, resist the temptation and only cross when the causeway is not flooded!)

We went to watch to watch the tide come in and ended up staying to watch a rescue.Only drive the cause way when it's safe in the safe tide times. Time displayed on the cause way and online. We spent a few happy hours watching an idiot get rescued from his stranded car. 15 coast guard's and two boat. Good watching, kids were entertained.

Wonderful place, beware the incoming tide. But it is very entertaining to watch vehicles coming off the Island late and driving through the salt water. Just remember to wash the underside of your vehicle and replace the brake pipes in a couple of years as salt and metal is not a good mix

It was a great day out on Holy Island. Make sure to drive over the causeway during the safe crossing times as the tide does cover it. You can also walk across the sand/mud which looks great fun and we would do that next time! There's one main car park for visitors just outside the village. Parking is expensive (£7 for 4 hours) but not much we can do about that. Really recommend!
