The Starting Gate
Bad customer service ruins the place. We came here today to enjoy a drink and some snacks. Whilst cocktails and food served was nice customer service has got serious issues. The lady took our orders, but whilst the place was not busy, it took way too long to receive our food and drinks. We have received some of our drinks, when the lady out of the blue came with the card terminal to pay. She did not even show a receipt or offered one, I tapped my card without knowing how much our bill was. It made me feel like they think me and my partner would run away without paying... After we finished our meal we were asked four times by different members of staff if we wanted anything else. I asked for another beer, but that did not get served until the next member of staff asked if we wanted anything else. Then I had to ask if we could get the beer I ordered 15 minutes ago. We left the place immediately when they came again to ask if we wanted anything else, which we found offensive, as if they really wanted us out. With all the waiting time we spent 75 minutes here whilst the place wasn't busy. We spent approximately £40 for a snack, a dessert, a cocktail, a mocktail and 2 glasses of beer which is fair.

I had an amazing time at the Starting Gate pub! The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the highlight of the visit was undoubtedly the exceptional chef. The dishes were not only delicious but also beautifully presented. The attention to detail and the quality of ingredients truly shone through. I can't wait to return and savor more of the culinary delights prepared by their talented chef. Highly recommended!

It has taken me far too long to write this! But I can't fault this place. My friend and I decided to eat here after a stressful train journey. It was warm and welcoming, and there were tables available. From the start, we were served by Sophie. This girl went above and beyond! My friend has an array of serious allergies and and Sophie went through every item with us and personally spoke to the chef to put our minds at ease. Even when our food arrived and we weren't sure about a sauce, Sophie still went and double-checked for us! Most importantly for us, Sophie didn't make my friend feel any different. It was no hassle and and she was so patient with us. We can not thank Sophie enough!!! We were also served by the manager and another server who did our drinks, and they were both brilliant! The food was also very tasty and arrived hot and quickly! When we are in that area again, we will definitely be returning. Thank you!!!

Great food and kind staff. Sunday roast was amazing. Service a bit slow despite it not being super busy at the time, but overall staff were very helpful and the atmosphere at lunchtime was great.

Pretty average food and service. The pigs in blankets hardly had a blanket at all (very over priced!) and the roast was ok. Good Yorkshires though!

The staff initially are enthusiastic, but it soon gets taken out of them. Managers and staff have no knowledge of real ales that they attempt to sell.....when they are available!!!!...and I have found customers are a great inconvenience to their chatter and mobile phone access. The photos are NOT of the Starting Gate, but show how you should refurbish a classic Victorian public house

I went to check out the place the week before, then i decided to go this wednesday, finishing work early made it possible to treat myself to a lovely burger with free glass of red Chiraz wine, I also ordered the apple & gooseberry crumble with vanilla icecream, a beauty. Beautiful pub. I emailed the photos to my family in France too .

The Starting Gate
This is a brilliant pub / restaurant. The food is extremely high quality and incredibly reasonably priced. It's got a lovely atmosphere. The staff are all lovely and friendly and helpful - we had exceptionally good service from Clement tonight and could not believe it when we found out that it was his first shift. He did a fabulous job and has left an incredibly positive impression, but the whole team is great. We are very lucky to have this as our local pub and will be back again and again. Very highly recommended.
