South Portland St Suspension Bridge
The bridge, made from wrought iron with arched sandstone towers at either end, has a suspension span of 414 ft the bridge deck is 13 ft wide. It was built between 1851 and 1853, replacing a temporary wooden bridge on the same site (used from 1832 to 1846) designed by Robert Stevenson. The bridge is so named due to being the continuation of South Portland Street in Laurieston; however it is perpendicular to the better-known Carlton Place

This bridge has had various names. Portland Street Suspension Bridge, South Portland Street Suspension Bridge, Carlton Bridge, Clyde Street Suspension Bridge - I've even heard it as Saint Andrew's Suspension Bridge because it's near St Andrew's Cathedral - however - there is another St Andrews Suspension Bridge crossing the Clyde Water at Glasgow Green, so it's terribly confusing. When Glasgow was city of Culture/ Architecture / Garden Festival, the bridges on the Clyde were lighted and painted, sadly, now, everything's jaded and faded, graffiti'd and allowed to fall into disrepair. There's a lack of pride these days or something

Granted it is a very aesthetically pleasing and historical artefact but it is still simply a footbridge that allows you to get from one side of the Clyde to the other - and back again if you so wish. it was a bit windy today, yesterday it was pouring rain, the day before it was brilliant sunshine. What else can I tell you?
