Safestay York Micklegate

Lacks basic equipment. No kitchen, not even a kettle or microwave. The bathroom in my dorm is horrendous, a tiny plastic cubicle with no hot water, no soap and at my last night even the shower curtain was gone. There's no personal touch or sense of homeliness. Some noisy and drunk people in the common rooms. Safestay made the worst out of a beautiful building.

I really like staying at Safestay. I stayed in on0e of the common rooms with the bunkbeds in the past, but the triple room was pretty great too. A real value for money place for anyone to stay.

At the end of the day, it’s a cheap place to stay, but don’t expect the fun hostel experience of connecting with people here. The vibe is more like a hotel in which you share your room with 7 strangers. Also, the front door remains unlocked at all times and staff doesn’t seem to pay attention to who walks in so “safestay” isn’t very apt in my opinion. There are privacy curtains on the beds which is nice, except in my room the curtains were missing on the ends of the beds closest to the next bed over, so I almost didn’t see the point if the one exposed side is facing the person closest to you. And finally, they allowed me to purchase a towel for £6 and said I could keep it but if I had room in my suitcase for a towel then I would have just brought my own. They should offer clean used towels to rent for cheaper. There is a laundry room and they’re already washing and reusing the sheets (hopefully!) I don’t see why they can’t do the same with the towels.

good location and 24hr desk service. room wasn’t the best - shower drainage was slightly clogged and sink was fully clogged, but they had a huge cage for luggage storage which is a plus. overall acceptable for the price that i paid for one night’s stay. suggest that you book directly on their webpage for the best rates.

it’s really convenient which is good, nice and warm and the staff are so friendly. in room 17, there is a weird hatch in the wall that opened which was very creepy and made us feel unsettled but we blocked it with out suitcase. Also, I’m not a supernatural believer but it has a very eerie almost haunted atmosphere and there was random bangs and my camera on my phone started to glitch. it’s not the best hotel but it’s the best for value

Very friendly helpful staff. Had my own room so can't comment about the dorms but my room was very quiet and clean.Towels were provided and kettle and TV in my room.Thank you so much for my stay, and especially to Owen for mending my phone

Won’t recommend this to anyone. Staff were incredibly rude.We found out our previous room (room 24, ground floor) was too cold as our beds were situated next to the window. We asked the reception for any available beds that’s further away from the window. Reception changed us to room 20 on the third floor. We then found out, as seen on the picture, that the cable of the radiator was not even long enough to be connected to the power socket.We went downstairs and asked reception for an extension cable. They said they didn’t have any and lied that whole building’s central heating was under maintenance so none of the heater was working. We checked our room 24 again and then the heater was definitely working.That night, we used extra bedding from an empty bed because it was so cold at night and then next morning we were charged extra!!The staff at the reception was definitely messing around and was just too lazy to do anything. Please stay away.

Great location, friendly staff, has late checkout, lots of food and drinks places nearby. Had a quad room. The room itself was good size. But it smelled of fresh paint, which was a bit strong. Also, there are no proper windows, so the way to get fresh air and it was located in the basement it was dark. But the actual hostel was nice, colourful, decor was nice.
