Stone Stair Carpet

Such an awesome idea. Like a Persian carpet leading down to the water's edge, gone green with sea algae and at it's lowest steps covered in darker seaweed. The more they descend into the water the darker they get...The last of the sculptures on the Sculpture Art Trail (and typically, the one I wanted to see most). Along the North side of The River Wear Riverside Walk, from Wearmouth Bridge to the now dilapidated North Pier before hitting Roker Beach.Behind the white rails separating pedestrians from quayside. So might actually miss it if you're not looking for it. Unlike myself who was. Interestingly many of the local dog walkers didn't know it was there. So asking them was useless as they kept pointing me in the direction to the Art House which has plain rugged steps and rug carved into it too.

Nearly missed the steps as no signage to say where they are , quirky bit of sculpture.

Stone Stair Carpet, part of the Sculpture Trail artworks. These designs were cut into the original steps that led down to the harbour by Colin Wilbourn a local artist who has done lots of art installation pieces around the Northeast. One notable piece was the last supper carvings at Prebends Bridge in Durham.
