Good for accessing paths to Scald law and Carnethy hill. Only 3 stars as getting in and out of the lay-bys can be tricky and dangerous on such a fast road. On the plus side there is no charge for parking and, usually, even when flotterstone is packed you can get a space here.

There is normally a good snack van in the layby. Useful before heading into Edinburgh or heading back south.

Free parking in the layby if you want to get up into the Pentlands from the A702. The walk in from here is a bit boggy but it does give you easy access to West Kip, East Kip, Scald Law and Carnethy hills. You could also reach Turnhouse fairly easily - although bit would be quicker from Flotterstone - or head over the saddle to the reservoirs.

Good park lay by for The Old Kirk Road" path over the Pentlands...limited spaces and traffic passes close."
