Raja Ram Mohan Roy, one of the key figures in India's socio-cultural and intellectual history, is indeed honored with a statue in Bristol, United Kingdom. The statue was unveiled on June 28, 1997, and is located in College Green, near the Bristol Cathedral. The statue was commissioned by the Ram Mohan Roy Memorial Trust and sculpted by Niranjan Pradhan. It serves as a tribute to Ram Mohan Roy's efforts in promoting education, women's rights, social reforms, and his role in the abolition of the practice of Sati (widow burning) in India.Ram Mohan Roy is widely regarded as a pioneer of the Bengal Renaissance and a progressive thinker who advocated for modern education and social reforms in 19th-century India. His ideas and writings greatly influenced the Indian society and played a significant role in shaping the intellectual discourse of the time. The statue in Bristol serves as a recognition of his contributions to both Indian and global history.

An interesting man and interesting choice for a statue, however this is not an ordinary piece politically correct, inclusiveness..This man was a truely great thinker and had much to say and with some courage, with regard to women's rights in the Indian sub continent...teenage marriage, seclusion,Purdah and Sati, the ritual burning of widows..He was a great supporter of British rule in india, belived that the basic liberism of the British was good for Indian society, and that rule from London was independent, incorruptible, and far away from despotic rule by Nawabs, and Rajas. He wanted Indian society to have basic rights, the greatest good to the greatest number" as his great supporter Jeremy Bentham called it. He was a liguist and political thinker

Felt a sense of deep reverence standing at the feet of the statue of Ram Mohan Roy in the courtyard of the historic Bristol cathedral. Here is the man who was once berated and cast out of the society for raising his voice in support of womens rights and asking for banning the heinous practice of burning young girls on the pyre of their departed husbands (known as Sati). Here is the man who went against the norms of the society and dared to defy the majority firm in his belief that the various wrongful practices of the middle ages must be ended and worked tirelessly to make his vision come true. Out of deep respect for his erudition, his courage, and foresight, the then British government came forth supporting his view and enacted a law for the 1st time banning the age old practices. Countless lives were saved thanks to Ram Mohan Roy, and it set a precedent that allowed the youth to dream for a new India ushering in renaissance in the then Bengal, and in due course spread around in India and beyond.
