The Shields Ferry is a long-established transport service that is well worth experiencing if you are visiting North East England and want to view North Shields and South Shields from the River Tyne.

Very handy for exploring both sides of the river and for the views of the river and its traffic.

A great way to get from north to south Shields and vice versa, especially with the current replacement bus on the metro. A fun boat trip too. The landing area is on a pontoon which moves about in the water. An experience not to miss.

Great waiting room on the river side. Smooth crossing to South Shields for £2.10p swing a fortune going around the long way.

I went on this ferry on a hot sunny day but there was a refreshing breeze coming from the North Sea so it was a delightfully uplifting experience. I can't remember the last time I went on a ferry and I was as excited as a little girl, which must seem strange to the locals! At the other side I visited a circular library, which apparently is now called a Centre of Words or something but it was very lovely inside, light and airy with views out across the Tyne Estuary, a big space in the middle of it and reading areas round the outside. In the cafe downstairs I had a cup of coffee and a huge homemade cheese scone for considerably less money than it would have cost in one of those generic chain cafes that are on every high street now.And then, I swam in the sea! What a joy that was but it's not a compulsory accompaniment to getting the ferry!Sadly, despite a very fast-paced walk back to the ferry, we'd missed the last one. So it is definitely worth having a word with the captain on the way out because the later scheduled trips don't always run.If you want to see a wonderful view of the lighthouse and harbour wall at the mouth of the Tyne, opening onto the great North Sea, with nothing between there and Norway, then this ferry ride is a must. And you may be lucky, as we were, to see a passenger/car ferry setting off to Norway and a couple of commercial barges waiting to come into the Estuary.
