Very friendly welcome with a great introductory speech from the lady on the front desk. The room notes are just the right length and there are several detailed panels to read on the way round too.Lots of stairs mean it's not ideal for the less mobile amongst us but it is a lovely diverting visit with a nice gift shop containing some great items at a range of prices. We bought a leather bookmark and two Dickens novels and got change from £7.The is a small paid car park nearby although on-street parking a little further away is free.

I only went to show my friend who is over from Canada.I wanted him to get a feel for what Portsmouth used to look like along Old Commercial Road. I thought that being the birthplace of a world famous author would be a bonus !Btw my friend loved it and the whole street too

Short stay in Portsmouth dedicated to this place! From the kind people that welcome you, to the details kept in this museum - truly amazing to walk around the 3 floors and have peak into the life back in the days and the life of Charles Dickens! The souvenirs are just the right amount and not commercial at all. Thank you!

Lovely place to visit on a day out - well worth the walk from the busier parts of town. Nice, peaceful road to walk down then into a beautiful house that really captures the feel of a different period. Worth reading all the display boards. The shop downstairs has some nice gifts and souvenirs. The staff were very helpful and eager to chat!

We visited on Monday 9th October 2023, however, Charles Dickens birthplace is not open until the weekends, so we could only see it from the outside.

Visiting this place was an absolute treat. The staff were fabulous and very informative and the setting was lovely and unspoiled. I loved getting a glimpse into the life of a historical literary icon.

Am visiting Portsmouth this weekend and always wanted to visit this place. For my great surprise, the website says it will be open only for 1 day in 3 months from now... therefore I am unfortunately not able to visit it. Extremely disappointing. It is a waste of this important place.
