Great example of a Souterrain. Seen a few in Northern Ireland. Mind your head. Bumped mine going in and out but worth it. You can park just next to it.

This earth house is one of the better ones. There are a couple in Angus which are open and not near good as this one. This one, being completely closed yet accessable makes it one of the best, you can walk right in around 10 meters or so.The entrance is very small and a little bit hidden but once you walk in it is possible to stand in as it is around 8 ft high inside by a meter and a half wide.

Unique neolithic feature - be prepared for the low ceiling height!

Bit hard to find as it is basically a hole in the ground. We pulled into the small lay near a drive to a private house and had a look(go down a few stone steps or grass slope). You can go in, it is taller inside than the entrance.

An earth house that very few people seem to know about. It's essentially an underground tunnel, built a couple of thousand years ago, with a very low entrance that opens up when you make your way in. Easy to miss when trying to find, but it is signposted. An information board near the entrance tells a little of the history. There isn't any parking but there is an area on the side of the road that can accommodate a vehicle without causing any obstruction.

A very interesting and well preserved piece of Scottish history! Although it's not much physically, it's an amazing look back at how food was stored and how our ancestors worked with the land, not against it. Very easy to miss, you just have to pull up in a layby (be aware there is a private road very close by) then follow signs as the entrance faces away from the road. I'd say it's a worthy stop, but doesn't take much time.

A bit like a giant rabbit hole, to scrabble into, but amazing piece of history. You'll need a torch, and mind your head, there's not much give in the stone ceiling!

Passed this a couple of times before, but stopped to check out this time. A bit difficult to get in at start, but widens/heightens the further in you go. Will need torch/mobile to see inside.

Will have to revisit as it was closed because of hibernating bats! We drove past initially looking for parking but there's just 1 little area you can pull in to where you're not obstructing any gates, room enough for 1 car. We will come back in warmer weather. The only other souterraine we've come across was in the Isle of Skye so it's great that this is on our doorstep and to discover that there are others in Grampian region
