Lovely place to have a meal. We we're on holiday in the area and 2 lads at another pub recommended this place to us as that pub wasn't serving food. I'm so glad that the other pub couldn't feed us as this one is a real gem and dog friendly too. Very clean and staff lovely. The landlord managed to fit us in on our first visit as we hadn't booked, but we booked for our second visit before heading back home. We will definitely be back in the area again and will book up for some more meals. The only fault we could find, if you can call it that, is that we couldn't see steak on the menu which we would have liked but still enjoyed what we ended up having.

Great meal and beer at the Rifle Volunteer.Never been there until now as it used to be a very rundown pub.Now it is a very pleasant lunchtime trip with good food and attentive staff.Food is well made and tasty and plenty of it. None of the miniscule snack masquerading as a meal here.I would go back there like a shot. Well worth a visit, but watch out for the average speed limits om the road outside

Service was great for my lunch today, food came fast, the only small problem was that my burger was a tiny bit burnt but that wasn't a big problem, the chips were really good and the mango sundae was really good aswell

Went for Christmas meal and I was very disappointed with the food & long wait and when it arrived it didn't look appetising the roast potatoes were so hard that you couldn't cut them had to try and scrape out the actual potatoes the turkey looked like it was a Bernard Matthews turkey roll sliced and just put on the plate the carrots & stuffing were the best items on the plate the sprouts and curly kale was served up separately and by the time they arrived at the table they were only warm gravy was waterer and had no taste. The desert was good and enjoyable. Will not be going there again and don't recommend the food

My husband and I went last night. It was a good experience, the service was lovely and the menu had lots of choice (see pics for the specials). We had steak pie and chips - incredible! Beef bourguignon was tasty ( if a little too garlicky) and could have done with a green vegetable to offset the richness; the mash was tasty but lumpy…I was okay with that though. Desserts were delicious ice cream and the best sticky toffee pudding either of us have ever tasted. We’ll definitely be back!!

Lovely large pub. Great location. Huge views. Great outdoors sitting (undercover and open for those sunny days with distant views to Plymouth and the sea). Lovely food. Very friendly, attentive staff. (Sorry, I forgot to leave the lovely waiting staff a tip, after sampling the extensive top shelf malt whiskies!). My 'spending breakdown' is because of 'tasting various malts', otherwise very reasonable! Thank you.

Had our club Xmas Dinner. Pork cheek, overcooked. Soup cold. Gravy was out of a packet and very salty. Sprouts like bullets. Kale chewy. No roast parsnips or roast carrots. They did rush some carrots when asked, but not a success. On the positive, the turkey and bacon were nice. Thank goodness the company was excellent

Food has greatly improved. Service was great staff were very attentive but not intrusive atmosphere was quiet due to the time of day. But the staff made you feel very welcome
