I have been suffering with severe eczema for the last 16 years, which had a disastrous effect on my mental health. Over that period, I had consulted many doctors, which did not help me in the way I needed. However, when I met with Dr. Alia at The Bridge Clinic in Maidenhead, I was impressed with her style of consultation. She took a lot of time to listen to me and I felt she understood me with regard to my dermatological and psychological conditions. The treatment plan that Dr. Alia put me on changed my life as well as my family's life. For the first time in 16 years my eczema is now under control and subsequently, my mental health has improved a lot.

In Dr Alia, I found a doctor who properly examined me and took time to listen before advising me. She was easy to talk to, very reassuring and kind; giving me confidence that she knew precisely how to treat me. I have sensitive skin and have struggled with allergies particularly on my face and had not yet found a treatment that would help. I have been suffering from Rosacea for more than 10 years now. During this time, I visited a number of doctors and popped countless pills but nothing helped. One NHS dermatologist even bluntly told me that I would have to learn to live with this condition . Most people don't realise the psychological impact that Rosacea has on the person.Luckily for me I happened to join a FB group where I chanced upon an interview of Dr Alia Ahmed about Rosacea. The way she conducted herself and spoke about the condition gave me renewed hope and I decided to pay her a visit. That was indeed one of the best decisions of my life. Dr Alia gave me that listening ear which most Rosacea patients yearn for, as nobody understands the stress and strain we go through every single day. She spent time not only explaining the medical course but going through my skin routine and making recommendations where needed. She is a very compassionate doctor, which is really rare.10 months down I am in a much better place, a much more confident person in myself and I love what I see in the mirror. Dr Ahmed is excellent - since my first appointment with her at Royal London just a few months ago, my skin is nearly completely clear after 3 years and seeing c6 other dermatologists.She met me at my lowest point - because the underlying skin condition hadn’t been properly treated I developed skin picking disorder and was really suffering with my mental health. I had scarring, scabs and open wounds all over my legs, arms, upper back, the top of my chest and neck.I am so grateful to Dr Ahmed for taking the time to listen to me, for properly looking at my skin and for not only helping me feel it was worth pursuing a solution but for finding that solution for me.After a course of steroids I have now been prescribed immunosuppressants. My skin is now almost totally clear and the incessant itching has stopped. This has had such a positive impact on my mental health.She also made sure I was referred to psychological support for my skin picking disorder - habit reversal training. I would really recommend Dr Ahmed to anyone with eczema. I was near breaking point without any answers from the NHS and no referrals onto dermatology despite my skin being extremely bad. After my first visit to Dr Ahmed I felt a massive relief, this cannot be understated. I walked away feeling like I had been listened to, and that my condition was being treated seriously. I’m now on the right path and although private dermatology is expensive, for me personally I feel it was worth it due to the positive impact it’s had on my life. Dr Alia was the first of many dermatologists I'd seen who really took the time to listen to my skin concerns and offered me a different solution. For the past 10 years I have suffered with severe and painful facial flushing and a worsening of the skin barrier leading to rosacea, perioral and seborrheic dermatitis and acne. I have seen many dermatologists who gave me topical creams for rosacea and recommended skincare products, all of which only made my skin worse.Dr Alia shared her refreshing view that rosacea often stems from a damaged skin barrier, which I had always believed to be the case. She also suggested the likelihood that, as I suspected, my severe flushing may be a rare and poorly recognised from of rosacea called neurogenic rosacea (NR).She understood that topical treatment was not an option for my skin and discussed different oral medications that might help. Through a bit of trial and error, one medication (Amitriptyline) has been beneficial in reducing some of the flushing-induced nerve-pain.I've since realised that, quite ironically, skincare products were the cause of my worsening skin and have seen a lot of healing since stopping using them completely (5 months ago) and only washing my face with water very minimally. I quite literally had to go against the advice of dermatologists and stop using even the most minimal of products.While this was undoubtedly the biggest solution for my skin, I thank Dr Alia for offering oral treatments options instead of just topical. And her compassion, recognition and help for the negative mental health effects that skin conditions like mine can bring with them.I hope more research can be done into NR and also alternative treatment options to topical creams and skincare for patients with a history of reactive skin. As it took me 10 really tough years to find a solution, with a lot of damage caused along the way by dermatologist recommend skincare products.
