South Knapdale Parish Church

If you're on the road to see St Columba's Cave, or to Ellary, please stop here and have a look at what is a beautifully preserved parish church from the late 18th century that's still a working institution.I doubt that the gallery is filled regularly, if at all, from the scattered communities around Achahoish, but this is clearly still a centre for the district.Visiting churches, whether live or de-consecrated, in Scotland is always interesting as the level of information about the church and the parish it serves is of varied quality and depth.This is one of those working churches where there's not much to go on (that I could find) about the history of the building and the people who have worshipped in it.The simple, clean, architecture with the large windows on the east-side to ensure that the minister's Sunday morning sermon will be illuminated is lovely. The geometric patterns of timber in the roofspace and the cleverly worked-in interplay of stone and wood flooring in the knave are masterly examples of the crafts they represent.This subtlety is often missed. Go see it and enjoy it.
