St. Mary's is a traditional stone, rural Suffolk church, sited facing the village centre T-junction & bus shelter. The very long, grassy churchyard is contained by a small stone wall & has gravestones & tombs of all ages. The church has a plain interior, that feels light & spacious with a mixture of stained & clear glass windows. The East end window is the largest & most ornate with intricate stained glass. St. Mary's North porch has an over the door recess where it's noted that a stone carving was prominent. However, the design of a jester sticking his tongue out at a woman in a frill collar, is nowadays missing. The church building is very well proportioned with quite a tall tower & weather vane. However, being sited on a flattish area of Tattingstone, the tower doesn't stand out from afar. (This is how the so-called 'Tattingstone Wonder' came to be built within walking distance, because Squire Thomas White wanted a church view, so built a tithe cottage with a 3-sided 'tower'). The extensive red-brick buildings with courtyard, facing the church on the opposite corner of the T-junction, is the former Samford Hundred workhouse. St. Mary's church records began in 1250 & the names of previous Rectors runs unbroken since 1277
