American Chef here! The Goat Cheese Salad was amazing! The rest of the meal was very good as well. The service was good but not great that is why that along with the atmosphere I can only give 4 stars! Lots of potential to make this one of Edinburghs top restaurants.

Warm atmosphere. Servers were so friendly and really couldn’t have done enough for us despite the busy time. The food was tasty. We had a selection of starters as a main. We also came for a drink before and sat out on the balcony which overlooks Victoria street. A lovely view and evening.

Excellent food! We had the seafood pasta and the fish & chips, both were delicious. It was getting chilly that evening so we ordered hot chocolate to go. Excellent!

Looked like a nice place to stop but the managers attitude was not great and made us feel not welcome. The food was average at best. Everyone needs customers no matter how much they spend.

The restaurant is down some stairs off the street. Very warm inside and was not offered to sit on the terrace to enjoy the scenery. Found out about it when looking for the restroom.Staff was not very attentive by the food was delicious.

Was looking for authentic food and found this place with was 'est 1980'Looked busy so we thought we would try. Ordered Peppercorn chicken with Haggis, hot seafood platter with catch of the day and mussel starter with cream and garlic sauce.Wanted to order mash as a side (on the menu) to be told they don't sell mash.Seafood platter came out like they just threw it onto the plate.. scallops were the size of a 1p coin. The sauce was bland and the catch of the day was haddock which was tough and overcooked.Peppercorn chicken - the best thing on the plate was the haggis.Mussels starter- nothing creamy or garlic about it. It was bland which was disappointing.Service was rubbish. Understaffed with 2 waitresses running the busy restaurant.Carpe Diem - sieze the day but don't waste your time on rubbish food.

Stopped at Maxies for a quick bite while walking the Royal Mile. Had the haggies starter and it was delicious.

Really enjoyed starter (Thai fishcakes). Fish and chips for main. Fish was quite small. Chips were very good. The young gent was very polite and helpful. Wouldn’t say the same for the young lady that worked there. Would I go back….maybe.

As you walk down stairs the atmosphere captivates you and makes you feel at ease. It can be warm down there, but after walking about and getting cold outside it was welcoming.I ordered the haggis and mussel starters because I wanted to try these on my first trip to Scotland. See my photos for the starter size because I was impressed. And they both tasted amazing. I'm glad I chose Maxie's to try these dishes for the first time.I ended it with the Cranachan, which was sweet and had lovely juicy raspberries throughout. All Enjoyed with the whisky of the month of course. The only shame is I don't live this side of the UK or i'd certainly visit more often. Thank you for a great meal and experience.
