Restaurant 1701

Certainly not the heavy eastern European cuisine I was expecting, 1701 is light and modern ranging from Spain to Afghanistan (and seemingly omitting Russia). An interesting visit for the interesting historical background to the dishes, but I'm not sure I'd come back. The food was good but not fantastic - I'm happy to drop much more than my 1701 bill for something truly amazing, but this simply wasn't up to the standards I'd expect.

1701 is a kosher restaurant located near Liverpool street station. As you enter the courtyard leading to the restaurant, you will get a glimpse of the Bevis Mark synagogue. Traditional Jewish/Israeli dishes such as chopped liver, gefilte fish, Jerusalem grill mix etc. are offered on the overall expensive menu. 1701 reinvents these traditional dishes,by adding finesse that you would expect to find in fancy French restaurants. The idea is quite good but considering the average price for a main is around £30, customers would expect to the full traditional experience of these staple dishes. There aren't many kosher restaurants in London and they tend to not make much effort with presentation. 1701 is the antithesis to these places. Presentation is stunning and the food taste really good. There could be more of a middle ground and better value for money in terms of what you get in your plate. Overall, a nice but expensive place to eat a very good and tasty kosher steak.
