Abbeyhill Colony of Artists
The Colony of Artists Open Studio did not disappoint. Now in its 13th year, there are over 30 artists exhibiting their work over this weekend: paintings, prints, photographs, jewelry, screen-printing, sculpture, handmade crafts, venetian masks, printed & embroidered textiles, mixed media, ceramics. The list goes on.The Colonies developments in Edinburgh (of which there are eight) are model dwellings built in the second half of the 19th century to provide improved living accommodation for the working class. They were built as double flats with front doors on opposite sides of the building, allowing each flat to have a front garden. It's been said the term Colony derives from the fact that the developments were outside of the city when they were first built or that they were Colonies in the sense of a community of similar people (artisans).Speaking to one of the artists today – I learned that nine artists were living in the Colonies at the time of the first ever open studios. I guess you could call it more of an open house. Last weekend, many doors were open to share the work of 32 artists. And where there is art, there is music, no?

During their open for weekend saw so many maker crafts! Amazing to meet the artists and see their wares with the opportunity to purchase too. Lovely setup.
