Some years ago I was a Dad in the situation of having a child taken by the Mother and refused access. Destroyed and heartbroken I didn't know what to do. Childrens services and the Police didn't want to know, although a very kind Police officer did recommend I don't go to the mothers house as it would make things worse. A solicitor then said at best in 18 months I'd be £20,000 down and MIGHT get some weekend access. How could this be, I was the good party here. This isn't right or fair I thought. Then I found Michaela, and Steve. Instantly I had someone who'd listen, someone who seemed to care about the right family outcome rather than just their own finances. It was clear this is more than a job to them. I felt a massive weight off my shoulders. I swiftly undertook every task I was given. Ticking off every stage of the process to get to court knowing the complex legal paperwork side was being taken care of. Some miracle happened and only 5 weeks after seeing my son for the last time, Michaela was waiting for me bright and early outside my local court. I appreciate I was lucky, but I was also, thanks to Michaela, prepared. I left court with a temporary residency order giving my son the right to live with me, in his home, without fear of being removed. A couple of month later, a further court hearing made this order final. I'd gone from not seeing my son, to having a sole residency order in 18 weeks! I'm no different to any of you reading this. Just over a year ago I only got to see my grandson once a week for an hour. After working with Michaela my grandson now lives with my son, is safe and we are all over the moon. My story....I was taken into the court process by my daughters father claiming I had been preventing him access. This was not true. I foolishly thought it was going to be straightforward and the court would listen to what I had to say. I decided to start as a litigant in person. The first hearing went ok but the father had legal representation and they managed to slip things into the interim order that I had not agreed. I decided I had to have legal representation at the next hearing and instructed a direct access barrister. That was an even more foolish and costly mistake. There really is no place for solicitors and barristers in the family law court!Anyway, by now I was totally stressed and quite worried about how this was all going to turn out. Someone had mentioned using a McKenzie friend and I was very fortunate to find Family Law Assistance on my google search. I had spoken to other McKenzie friends but while I could see their value, they just didn't fill me with the confidence and reassurance I desperately needed. After an initial discussion with Michaela I felt as though I had found someone who really understood me, who was saying the words I had expected to hear, and who gave me the confidence to believe this was the right way forward.
