St Peter's Church
Holy communion on Sunday at 11.The name “Slaughter” comes from old English 'Slohtre', which means ‘muddy place'. The village is the epitome of idyllic charm, in the banks of the River Eye. One of the most picturesque and idyllic villages in the Cotswolds. It has remained utterly unchanged for more than a century with no building work taking place at all since 1906.It is absolutely lovely. And it’s opened daily during sun time. I was lucky and had the chance to participate from the service. The bells ringing in that beautiful church with beautiful garden was a great experience. The anglican parish church is dedicated to St. Peter back to 1803, but since 1403 it was known as St Mary's. We also know there has been a church since at least the 12th century and possibly as early as the 11th. The first rector known in 1251 appears to have been an Italian. The building we see today is mainly 12th century, with extensive restoration in 1877 which re-used most of the original medieval stonework. The 12th century tower is built into the south-west corner of the nave, while the north aisle runs the entire length of the nave. Saxon stonework is incorporated into the lower part of the tower's west wall. It is carved in three orders with traditional chevron patterns and rests on beautifully carved corbels. The carving is typical of the 12th century, but the pointed arch was developed a century later.A small rounded window dates back to the 11th century. The north arcade dates to the middle of the 12th century. It may have been inserted after the church suffered an attack around 1145. The 1st Earl of Gloucester, was one of the military leaders during the war and owned territory in this region. The carved tower arch was made for a broader tower, and possibly adapted to fit the narrower opening of the present arched opening.Under the tower arch is a deeply cut 15th-century font. It is so large that it may have originally been from the 12th-century, cut down in the late medieval period to its current shape. The carving is very worn.In the chancel there’s a 13th-century piscina, octagonal chalice type; while also on the south wall is a 14th-century sedilia, or clergy seat, in a triangle-headed nich.Opposite the sedilia is a 14th-century recess into which has been inserted a richly carved tomb of Frances and Andrew Wanley of Eyford, dated 1682.On the south chancel wall are three Elizabethan brass plaques to members of the Slaughter family, the oldest of which dates to 1583.

St Peter's Church
As churches restored in Victorian times with limited regard for heritage go, St Peter's is a nice example. The building is open. Stained glass is largely 19th century but with an interesting 1990s addition in a modern style

Gorgeous old church sitting within nature's best landscape. Right beside an old graveyard.
