I had an issue with my noisy BMC1.5 Narrowboat Engine, power kept running away and then cutting out, particularly when warm engine, it was hard work to cruise and worried me that it may blow the gasket. I had an 'Engineer' in Rickmansworth 'repair' the fault and service the engine to no change of the issue, cost me £300+...Got to Berkhamsted and came across Darren in Cowroast Marina Engineering, spoke to him about the issue and he told me that the governor may have a misshape and when hot let air in to the fuel injection, that it would cost a bit for the part but would test it and check with a fuel refurbishment engineer for an overall price. I booked it in with a full service and the part to be inspected etc.On return of the quote and the issue being possible to fix I pulled the trigger to get the works done.WoW! once done it was quiet, quieter than I ever expected, the engine purring and the fuel injectors working perfectly without the engine over-revving and cutting out. All fixed and like a new engine.I would now rather pay a respected engineer like Darren a rate that is realistic and the works are trusted rather than throwing away a few hundred ££ to a fake engineer on the Ricky cut. I met Darren in 2019 , his knowledge of narrow boats is second to none in my opinion. I personally would recommend Darren as the go to person for any advice for your engine or just about boating . As a resident I always ask Darren first . He advises me and seeks not to embarrass but to embrace a fellow enthusiast .I have had my boat blacked in 2020 March excellent job and mended a leak repairing my heating on my narrow boat.Repaired my Water pump out of hoursI cannot fault his skill.In every period of work carried out he has been courteous and professional.

We had a new Beta Marine engine fitted here, woodwork around the new engine, and the hull blacked with new anodes. Darren at Cowroast Marine Engineering was really friendly, patient and calm throughout, giving us regular updates and asking questions if there was a decision to be made - we knew exactly where we were each step of the way.When we were looking for a new engine I lost count of the number of people who recommended Darren. He showed us photos of 'before and after' work he'd done previously, and Beta themselves praise Darren as being the best. He gave us a quote and the final work was the amount promised (with the agreed extras that were needed such as the anodes, new bilge pump and a couple of fixes for our fuel delivery system). We were sent an invoice for the engine deposit by email, and again for the balance of the full amount.I've attached photos here and as you can see, the results are INCREDIBLE. We could not be happier. Since leaving Cowroast we have travelled over 25 miles and the engine is absolutely perfect. The old engine had been dead for a long time after years of struggling through and the bilge was a total mess before. It is now amazing! I feel confident that if I had any questions or problems I could contact Darren and he would help (not that we anticipate any, just that he's that sort of person). He takes pride in his work and knows that it's a reflection of him, and you can really see this in the results.Thank you so much :)

Since buying an ageing narrowboat a number of years ago, Darren has carried out a variety of work for me including welding/plating, blacking, new inverter + batteries, new alternator and fixing the engine-start electrics - so it starts first time every time!Darren's work is of a high standard and he takes the time to explain the work. Everything that he has done has been finished properly and is still working as it should. He's friendly, professional and always happy to offer advice.He's not the cheapest, but nothing boat-related ever is, especially if you want it done properly. Highly recommended for any marine engineering work you need doing.Cowroast Marine also sell a small range of chandlery items such as gas, coal, logs, Elsan Blue, etc., at reasonable prices, which is another big plus for me.
