Kirkwall Youth Hostel
Absolutely stunning place, with a fantastic staff! Very very helpful, warm, and welcoming. They also have a repository of info on the Orkney Islands - a file for each - which has some very fascinating info and helps plan. Its a small town so location doesn't matter much. The vibe of the place is great, and would highly recommend a stay here.

The staff here are really lovely and helping. It's a great spot. The kitchen and lounge area are huge. The washroom is more than adequate, and the machines work great. Kirkwall isn't big, so the hostel was situated close enough to everything. I was delighted to have two pillows in my bunk, and the room was very clean. There is a locker in the room for every bed, but you'll need to bring your own lock.I definitely plan on coming to Orkney again, and this is where I'll stay.

Youth hostel, but mostly old codgers staying, very welcoming. Good place to hang out for independent travelers.

The older English receptionist was rude and quite hostile to us because we were a bigger group. Instead of explaining politely the house rules, we were told we were going to be kept on a short lead. When we showed we didn't like how we were being spoken to upon arrival, we were told we could either be kicked out there and then or early in the morning, he was 'easy going' about it. We weren't being rowdy, or mouthy, or anything that would justify the cheek we got. The hostel itself is fine. Rooms are clean, although having bins inside the rooms would help but this is a minor issue. Only one shower for the accomodation block.

Standard SYHA hostel. Rooms ok. Good kitchen and lounge. Poor WiFi in rooms. Some way from centre of Kirkwall, but near to Balfour hospital from which you can catch the X1 bus which takes you to all the main places on the island.

Pleasant staff, relaxed atmosphere and quiet away from road traffic. All on ground floor, and plenty of parking. Old-style shower cubicles with plenty of hot water. Kitchen facilities good.Downside of one's visit could be the cold Drying Room - definitely not ideal if getting back with wet gear.

We had a very nice and helpful reception at the hostel. The room was nice, the kitchen well equipped and a cozy lounge. Our bicycles could be stored inside.The best part was that we could use the facilities after our checkout while waiting for our ferry to leave in the evening.

Good and bad. Nice staff, new duvets and 2 good pillows! But basically it is a 60s/70s dorm block, with some areas like the toilets not being upgraded since then. It was fine, just very old school and tatty. Needs a total refurb. A good 15 min walk into town.

Nice enough place to stay. Not cheap though for what you get. No TV or coffee/tea making facilities and you have to use the bathrooms down the hall which are bit date, especially the showers. It was however spotlessly clean and the reception staff were incredibly professional and friendly. It is a reasonable walk from town and facilities but not a deal breaker.
