Nice hidden gem. Really nice place to go for a short walk and to take in some history. The castle remains are more than you would normally see. There are great info boards dotted about to give you a clear idea of what would of stood in the past.If you really go hunting you can also find and old iron water wheel hidden behind the castle.Definitely worth a visit. And nothing much beats the colours of autumn.

My son wanted to swim in the river, so we drove to Skenfrith and parked by the castle. While he splashed about in cold water, I took the dog round the castle. It's not a large castle but still interesting and the setting is lovely. The church is close by and worth a visit. The swimming is popular but you should always be careful to swim only when conditions are favourable.

Right in the middle of village life, Skenfrith is the remnant of a substantial fortress that protected the border between Wales and England. Known as part of the Tri Castles of Gwent (includes White Castle and Grosmont) that were built upon earlier Norman fortifications, designed by Hubert de Burgh during the reign of King Stephen. This low lying castle was holding a strategic spot on the Monnow River. It has a clear internal green which is used by the local and visitors for picnics and to dry off from swimming in the river which you can access via an arched entrance through the castle. You can pick up a lovely meal at The Bell, a 17th century inn which overlooks the castle. There is no dedicated parking but you can park on the surrounding area to the castle.

Lovely spot in a small village. No entry fee. Castle is a ruin on the river Monnow cut through the castle ground and you will find a shallow place to paddle

A beautiful village with a stunning range of historical properties. The ruins of the castle well documented in a very pretty river setting. Lovely walks, friendly people. Small amount of parking for casual visitors and walkers.

Got free tickets from National Trust. Decided on this venue as we hadn't been there before. Didn't need the tickets as it was free. Its an OK location if you are planning it as part of a country hike. You couldn't spend all day here. Lovely little village and people really friendly.
