The House with Two Front Doors
I booked a two-night stay to celebrate our engagement and it was quite simply perfect. The house on Mermaid Street is a central location for exploring Rye and when all the day-trippers leave, it is wonderfully quiet and peaceful. There is an option of using the downstairs of the house as much or as little as you want. With two sumptuous reception rooms and a walled south-facing courtyard at your disposal. And who can forget the steps at the entrance to the house - perfect for a cuppa, glass of wine, or ice cream all as you watch the world go by.We stayed in The Mermaid Suite which is large, light, and airy. There is a good supply of tea, coffee, and bottled water in the room along with a kettle, with milk popped outside your room in the morning for that much-needed cuppa.Right from the point of booking Rachael showered us with care, love, and wonderful hosting. Huge credit to Rachael for all the special touches that make a stay here truly special. Beautiful fresh flowers, gorgeous colourful candles, carefully arranged glassware. Rachael had even gone out of her way to buy the same brand of champagne I was bringing and have it chilled ready in the room so I could pass her my non-chilled bottle in a very skillful swap.Breakfast really was the best and gave Rachael the opportunity to showcase her amazing skills (which, btw, she hides under a bushel) as a chef and most wonderful host. We mentioned Stephen was veggie and she said to leave it to her and well what can we say - two mornings of feeling very looked after indeed (see pics)Thank you again Rachael for making our stay feel incredibly special. And since this is a delayed review (from August 2022) there will be another very shortly for our subsequent stay in May 2023 :-)

Located on the ancient cobbly Mermaid street, possibly one of the prettiest streets in England, THWTFD's is superb for a stay in Rye. We stayed in the Smugglers Suite, which is loaded with character and space! Nicely furnished with antiques and I am pleased to say a modern (but traditional) bed. There was a nice touch with some bubbly brought to our room on arrival. We finished out stay with a full English in the lovely kitchen. Although the food was delicious, we were even more delighted to enjoy the company of the hosts Harry and Ilaria, while we polished off our tea and coffee. They have a band called The Right Times". THWTFD is definitely "The Right Place" if you want to stay in Rye."

I'm VERY behind on doing this review but had to say how much we loved out stay, about 8 months! Forgive me! The rooms and house are beautiful and the location...well you're on Mermaid Street :) What more could you want.We stayed here while getting away on what is the yearly marker of a very hard day for us, a huge loss in our lives. Rachel didn't know this but it felt like she did in how she treated us, with so much care, kindness and love. It feels like you're staying in the home of a beloved aunt, all the magic and comfort that goes along with that. Yummy local breads and the best breakfast, laid out magically. We were given as much privacy or interaction with the host as we wanted, which I appreciated. I'm sure some wouldn't want to spend time talking in the morning or by the aga with wine in the evening. But if you do, Rachel is the best company. And if you don't, she will leave you alone :)The house is a dream. Rachel is a dream and Rye is one of our favourite places in the world.Thank you !Annabel & Alec xExcellent.

Loved our stay - the perfect location on picturesque Mermaid street, and a home full of character and history. Stayed in the larger room and it was bigger than it looked in photos and full of charm. We especially loved the two sitting room options downstairs, with firewood provided and the generally cosy atmosphere perfect for resting after a day out and about. Harry and Ilaria were excellent hosts, and the generous breakfast was great. Would stay again if ever were back in Rye!

Rachel is a perfect, welcoming host in a remarkable, characterful, historic home in the midst of 14th Century Rye. Our room looking over Mermaid Street was delightful, with everything we needed for a relaxing stay, close to the centre. Breakfast was memorable. Highly recommended.

Imagine staying in the most photographed street in Rye. That's what you get here. My girlfriend and I stayed here for two nights and couldn't recommend this place more. The house is 500 years old and is full of character and quirks yet offers the necessary mod-cons (plugs, lovely little bathroom, great WiFi). The room we stayed in was very spacious and had a view overlooking Mermaid street. In the corner was a lovely tea and coffee making table which contained the excellent tea-pig tea bags. The hosts made you feel like you were part of the family. We didn't feel we were in a BnB, more staying in someone's house. Breakfast was cooked for us while we chatted in the large kitchen and there was no pressure to eat up quickly. The full english was excellent, great flavour, the sausages had been hand picked from the local butcher. My girlfriend tried the continental as was overwhelmed by the portion size. Everything had been thought of and Harry and Ilaria were the most friendly and helpful hosts you could ask for. At the end we were even given a chocolate bar from the local chocolate shop.I wouldn't consider anywhere else to stay again in Rye. We will be back again. We drove and used the Strand car-park at the bottom of the road. I had the parking app installed on my phone and paid £7 a day to park.

It’s quite simple, don’t bother staying anywhere else in Rye! Go back in time in this 15th century house, with immaculate rooms and a bed worthy of a 5 star hotel! An old school B&B with a modern twist, located on the historic Mermaid Street. Delicious breakfast and lovely company. Thanks for having us, we’ll be back!

Fabulous stay, Rachel is the perfect host. The room was fully equipped with the coziest atmosphere. I fell I love with the quintessential farm house kitchen where Rachel served a gorgeous breakfast, complete with freshly fetched loaves from the local, top rated bakery. Looking forward to our next stay.

This place really is a gem. Perfect friendly, knowledgeable hosts and the comfiest bed linen I have ever slept in - would rival any top hotel! The room description makes it seem that you have a seperate bathroom, but it is in fact within your own room.one room is significantly larger than the other, but both are decorated beautifully and even the smaller one is roomy with a lovely chaise longe.Breakfast is amazing. Make sure you go for cooked!! all locally sourced and cooked to perfection in the beautiful kitchen. If you don't enjoy your stay here there is something wrong with you! We would stay again in a heartbeat.

My wife and I stayed at The house with 2 front doors, this weekend. The room was stunning. It was huge, and steeped in history. It had a very comfortable bed, and lots of space. Sue was lovely. Very friendly, very knowledgeable about the area, and cooked a great breakfast. A great place to stay. Really enjoyable. I
