The Shield - Student Accommodation Newcastle

One of the best students accommodation, services and reception in Newcastle. Tidy and clean studios. Helpful and lovely staff. I stayed 1 year in this accommodation and it was better than I expected. Thank you for taking care of the students. ❤️

I went there as a guest only. The place is really good even with on-site gym, that I wanted to book for my academic year. However, an ensuite room is very small, comparing with other accommodations, while the price comes same. Cannot say any other things, as I haven't lived there.

Nice accommodation, very close to northumbria uni. However, quite overpriced for what you are getting. The main downfall was the reception staff, not only were rude and unhelpful they were also inconciderate especially towards mental health problems. If a problem was to arise you would penalised rather than helped. I met many other people who felt this way during the year I was staying at this accomodation. As well as this, during the current Covid-19 situation the Fresh Student Living company has also decided not to waive our final rent payments despite many students being unable to access the accomodation. I feel this reflects their attitude to students generally. In my opinion it is a lot about making a profit and not about the wellbeing of the students there. I really wouldnt reccomend staying at The Shield.

The room I was given did not look like the pictures on their website, mine only had a really tiny window and it was smaller than the video they showed me before.

Exceptional staff team who are happy to help with anything. Brilliant rooms with such innovative use of space you can have separate drawers for everything! Yes the price is slightly higher than other places but when you have a problem you need fixing and can be fixed easily you can see what you pay for. I had a broken mattress, they replaced it the same-day with a brand new one no questions asked. As for the tenancy agreement.. be aware that any tenancy agreement, when signed, is almost impossible to get out of without replacing yourself. This is also clear in the tenancy agreement before you even sign it, so the reviews in which personal issues mean you can no longer attend university are horrible situations in which the accommodation teams; in individual accommodations, find their hands are tied by company-wide policies. I had a similar issue myself but the accommodation team here will do everything in their power to make your stay as care-free and all-inclusive as possible! But their hands are still tied when it comes to certain issues and you won’t find an accommodation that operates better. They’re even doing puppy therapy every Wednesday for 6 weeks !! Free food almost everyday available downstairs and although there could be more social events, all we need to do is ask and explain the problems long before they become an issue and they’ll be sorted! Massive respect to everyone in the office who works hard day in, day out to provide us with the best possible environment to work, live and thrive in! But every accommodation has a different culture, it’s up to us as tenants to find the right culture for us and to not expect extreme adjustments to be made for individual cases. The Shield is perfect for final year students, in the studios, and even first years in the shared flats. There’s no loud noise from music at all on my floor, the walls are so thick you can only hear anything in the corridors and even then it’s quiet. I wish I’d found this accommodation before my run-down student house experience of last year. Can’t thank the accommodation team here enough for their kindness, consideration and genuine help when I’ve had problems, personal or otherwise! 5/5, 10/10 rating for this brilliant new accommodation nestled away in the perfect distance from town to both get your steps in but not so far you have to Uber in everyday!

Everyone planning to live here should give this a read.The infrastructure and facilities are good, but that is where it begins and sadly, ends. THE SUPPORT OFFERED MATTERS A LOT ESPECIALLY FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS WHO ARE IN A NEW PLACE TRYING TO ADJUST TO A NEW SOCIETY.This is all about the management, and trust me, the management makes a huge difference to your experience. During the peak of the pandemic when we had no jobs and couldn't get any money back from my home country due to the situation there, their team kept sending us mails to pay the rent or face the fine inspite of me repeatedly making them aware of the situation and assuring that I'd pay it asap.We could not afford to live there anymore but was compelled to do so as they were not allowing us to end the tenancy. We couldn't go back to our country because of the huge sum of money we had to pay for the coming months back then as they were adamant on NOT LETTING US END THE TENANCY even when we were ready to settle the rent till the day we stayed. That too when most accommodations allowed to end tenancies if not waive off atleast some money off the rent.As a final resort I tried to take over a tenacy of another friend of mine living in the same accommodation who was going home in June and had paid till sept which again they refused, I would have paid him which would have been beneficial for both of us. And adding to it, we moved in a week after the start date. None of this was considered. Mentally we were completely traumatised because of the situation inflicted upon us, of course during the pandemic.No signed tenancy agreement was provided because of which we couldn't get an account at Barclays. Again inflicting loss on students who have international student loans. Not that something we were made aware of before choosing to live here.I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND STAYING HERE. Now is a time when mental support is supposed to be at its peak over anything else. And they failed miserably.I hope everyone finds a really nice accommodation and have a good stay in Newcastle. Think wisely not once not twice but make a smart decision.

Okay place, staff are inconsiderate, confused how if you lose your card its free to replace but accidentally replace it its £10. This was taken from my deposit which i was not made aware of. Seen better places to stay for cheaper too.

This is why you should book at The Shield! Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, I couldn't return home, and to be in a different country and away from my loved ones during these very scary times brought immense anxiety and concern. However The Shield's staff removed all my worries and made me feel like I was at home, always having someone to talk to whenever I needed. Keith, is one of the nicest people you can meet. He brings his beautiful puppies in every year for the students to play with, which no matter how stressful exams get, cuddling a puppy takes all of that away. He has never failed to cheer me up whenever I needed it and has even taught me how to bake and play pool! Vanessa, even though she has over 400 students to manage, she always makes time for each & every one of us. Sarah, Christy and Ray have always welcomed me with a smile on their faces, and helped me with anything I needed! This is why The Shield is the best. It isn't an accommodation, it's a home with a caring family!

Really lovely place. The staff are very friendly and always sort out any issues you might have.It's very close to the city centre and universities which is a big plus.Although it is very expensive.

Their website has been down and I have been trying to make an application however due to the site being down the application has not gone through. Since the site was down they have increased their prices, spoke to Vanessa the manager to discuss if they will honour the price prior to the price increase due to thier site being down, however she is convinced that their site was not down even though other members of her team explained when I called previously that their site is down hence the application is not going through.
