St Mary Magdalene's Church, Battlefield
Beautiful 15th century church, no longer used for services. Some people have bemoaned the state of parts of the grounds but in July the meadow at the West end was full of butterflies including skippers so it looks like this is intentional. Far better than well tended, sterile lawns. The carved pieta inside the church is older than me but sadly in better condition.

Beautiful piece of history that we never not visit on our Battlefield 1403 walk with the kiddies.

The Church of St Mary Magdalene in Battlefield, Shrewsbury was originally built in 1406 to commemorate the Battle of Shrewsbury. The Battle of Shrewsbury ws fought between King Henry IV and a rebel army led by Henry 'Hotspur' Percy. The battle was large and bloody, one of the first times longbows were used on both sides. The king triumphed and the rebel lords were executed.Reportedly built on the site of the bloodiest melee of the battle and a mass grave of over 1500 skeletons discovered in 1850, the original chapel became a college for priests in 1410. Little remains of this collegiate complex as it was demolished in 1547 and the land sold to the Corbets in 1683.The current church largely dates from the original construction in the 15th century but underwent an extensive restoration in 1860 by Pountney Smith, and much of the furniture inside is from that time.Inside, the timber ceiling dates from the restoration of the church and features many heraldic shields acting as bosses. They display the arms of knights who fought in the battle. The fantastic flooring of encaustic tiles are by Maw of Ironbridge. The pietà, an image of Our Lady Of Pity, once resided in the sedilia but is now mounted on the wall. The oak statue has been dated to the 15th century. The church is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust, and the key can be obtained from the Battlefield 1403 farmshop nearby.

This a beautiful church with some lovely old original features including a 15th century statue on the wall. There is plenty to see indide and the whole feel of the place was calm and relaxing. Don't be put off by the private land sign just keep going past that to the right and you'll come to a car park which is right outside the back of the church.Met some interesting people today, hi Chris if you're reading this was a pleasure to meet you. There's also a nice nature walk just behinde the church. All in all a lovely church to visit

Lovely small church with good walks near by on well maintained footpaths. It's very near to the site of the battle of Shrewsbury. It is also possible to go inside the church if you obtain the key from the nearby battlefield farm shop which can be accessed on foot through a near by gate onto a footpath along side a field.
