I have been coming here since the 1980s and it's a beautiful and peaceful spot. There used to be many basic campsites like this, hence the price of £3.50 a night. The toilet facilities are clean, and there is a sink for washing up with nice fresh cold water. Yes, there are also no lights in the toilet, doesnt everyone bring a torch when camping?. The site has been used many a time in the past for Duke of Edinburgh groups and is a good place to learn the basics of camping. The owner of the farm has always been very respectful, I'm not sure how these other reviews came about. If you want mod cons and pampering then go on Airbnb, a small bit of research would inform you what this campsite offers. Also, it's a nice walk up from the road to the campsite, hardly an Everest expedition!. There's no need to try to phone and book, just pitch up and pay in the morning. Be respectful of the farm, don't take walls down wherever they may be and maintain some modicum of silence. There are plenty of other sites with much more facilities on offer, this one caters for those who like the basic camping experience considering it isn't actually legal to wild camp in much of England.

My favourite campsite in the Peak District.Super cheap, never too busy, no cars as you cannot drive to the pitch, clean toilets, water, bins - all you need.

Very basic campsite, minimal facilities, basic toilet, no hot water, a long walk uphill from the road and no on site parking. It’s not billiard table flat, and the sheep leave plenty of fertiliser … but you are on a working farm on a hill in the Peak District. One step up from wild camping. If that doesn’t sound like heaven to you, then you are probably better going to one of the many modern campsites in the Peak. Or a hotel. My experience is that if you are respectful, quiet, and remember how this kind of walk on campsite operates, you’ll get on fine with the owner.

This experience was extremely eye opening and traumatising for me and my family. The facilities were filthy and there was poo covering the fields. The walk was very long and painful and the field was sloped which was extremely inconvenience. The woman working there was very very rude and disruptive to me and my group. She called us names and verbally abused us. She was extremely patronising and unwelcoming.Would not recommend this campsite at all no matter the circumstances.

Great campsite and lovely owners. I'm a climber, so please bear that in mind for my review (I do not mind a walk in, I do not mind spartan facilities, I like nice views and close proximity to climbing). Birchen Edge is a very short walk from the campsite but it is not obvious to find the way from the campsite on the first go (easier from Birchen going back). If there has been any rain and you want to keep your feet dry, I would suggest going back down to the carpark and up the main path to Birchen, as the route cutting across did look like it had the potential to be boggy. It's maybe a 10min detour but will keep your feet dry. If you're going to chance the direct route, aim pretty much straight for the cliff-top monument from the campsite. You'll see a stile and a short, scrubby path through the bracken will land you underneath Sail Buttress.Yes, the campsite is on a working farm and there are animals around (including friendly dogs) but that's fine for me and none of them interfered with my stay (other than an enthusiastic sheep dog who really wanted us to throw his squeaky frisbee!).The toilet block is just a toilet and sink and there weren't any showers as far as I knew, but you're paying £3.50 a night so I wouldn't expect one.My only improvement would be to provide a bar of soap in the toilets. I hadn't packed any and they only cost a couple of pence. Will definitely be back if I'm climbing at any of the edges better served from this site than North Lees.

campsite was badly run (poo everywhere, bad toilets, sloping field, long walk) the woman there was very badly mannered and made it her aim to ruin our getaway. She kept bothering us and wouldn’t leave us alone. Must’ve approached us about 8 times being patronizing and even calling us names. We left a day early as we could just not stand to be in the same campsite as this woman. She even shouted at me when I paid her as I had given her too much money and she refused to give me correct change!

Worst camping experience of my life. I've visited hundreds around the country, and this is by far the worst. This left me traumatised and shaken throughout my stay, which had to be cut short because of the verbal abuse thrown at me and my group. Whilst trying to relax and quitely playing card games, i was accused of starting raging riots. My extended family and i were called names and swore at relentlessly. Basic facilities but made worse by the whole experience. Painful walk from the car park, which left some family members in tears. The most horrible wicked person I've ever met, why own a campsite if you hate people ! Let herself into my tent early in the morning, requesting money. Shock me to my core. Would not recommend under any circumstances.

Terrible attitude of owner should have been £3.50 each charged 10 because she was angry we couldn't find the correct field (that wasnt sign posted) in the pitch black after being set up 2 hours, accused us of taking bricks from the stone wall, swearing at us and forcefully took the neighbouring tents property , all in all for my first time camping it was a horrible experience and they shouldn't be allowed to have a campsite if you can't communicate with people nevertheless we cleaned up our mess and left early doors

Still only £3.50/night. An absolute bargain anywhere but in this setting even better, and with a toilet block too. Cyclists welcome but you'll need to lift your bike over the gate. Can't fault it.
