This church is in Sneinton which is one of the oldest parts of Nottingham, it's name deriving from the same root as Nottingham and an Anglo Saxon called Snot. Like many cities what was originally a 'posh' suburb declined as population pressure increased and the wealthy moved out. Sneinton is worth a visit as the home of the mathematician George Green and the founder of the Salvation Army, William Booth. It is also worth a wander round for some lovely victorian architecture in small winding streets and alleyways. Some parts are still run down and other parts have been renovated and of course it has the distinction of a fully working Windmill.Saint Stephens is rather dark and grim looking but is one of the oldest parishes in Nottingham although the current building was built in the year of Victoria accession as is in the Gothic Revival style. See wikipedia for more information. It is also notable for the location where the parents of D. H. Lawrence got marriedThere is parking locally in the Greens Mill car park and also there are quite good views over Nopttingham.I have not had a chance to go inside but it does sound quite interesting with the reredos to the high altar being designed by George Frederick Bodley and carved in Oberammergau. It features scenes from the life of Christ. Also the choir stalls date from the fourteenth or fifteenth century and were originally from St. Mary's Church, Nottingham. They were acquired by the organist of St. Stephen's in 1848. They contain fine medieval misericords which have carved figures.
