Great for walking a dog or a little walk. Plenty of different routes and interesting landscape.Beautiful place.I'd avoid the car park in the evening, seen some car windows smashed now and then. It may become safer after dark. There are plans for a holiday caravan site. I've read them and they seem to have made efforts to have minimal impact on the nature reserve.

Beautiful public nature reserve with several dirt paths all around it! Sadly paths & terrain are NOT suited for wheelchair lovers. Popular with lots of ( mostly responsible & lovely dog walkers), BUT sadly there's still lots of dog mess left on the tracks, as well as litter (usual beer cans etc), which is why I fill a large bag each time I visit. More litter!/dog bins on site, would definitely help improve this otherwise lovely area! IT still remains a beautiful spot & worth the visit (only 15 mins drive from Houghton le Spring.

Both my dogs love this place. We always go before dawn and then the dogs can sit and watch the sun come up on a clear day. They love meeting there doggy friends for socialisation. If you have large friendly dogs or even small ones that love running around playing off the lead then the best time to go here is between 5.30am to 7.30am and usually between 6.15pm and 9pm. If you have dogs that need to be on a lead because they are nervous or to small or are ill or generally recovering from surgery the best time to go is between 7.30am to 6.15pm. If your a new comer to the quarry care needs to be taken for a few weeks on all routes as trees do uproot, some areas the rocks may fall of the quarry faces.just until you get used to all the sounds and how the ground feels underfoot. In extreme rain the place can be extremely slippy so ensure you wear proper hiking boots or wellies with a good grip. Be prepared to get dirty. My only complaint about this place is there are not enough poo bins.
