Had lunch here yesterday after a great morning hiking. Lovely warm pub with very friendly service and tasty food. Absolutely perfect for what we needed and would very much recommend.

Proper village pub. Dark atmosphere, real locals and good beer. So many of these pubs get tarted up and loose their soul. This one is real

Unashamedly a drinkers pub, I had excellent service, large quantities of food (just what I needed as a Coast To Coast thru hiker with this pub directly on the route) and a few laughs with the landlord and landlady. They have a couple of basic mini pods and space for some small tents in the back garden plus toilet and shower. They also have brown and black guinea pigs called Whiskey and Coke! In the morning I had the biggest full English breakfast I have ever eaten.

I booked one of the camping pods. It was not clean food crumbs and feathers covering the floor also you cannot close the door from the outside. The area outside the pod had lots of cigarette ends littering the floor. The combined shower toilet room had lots of paint coming off the wall the bin was overflowing. The drain for the shower was a crack in tiled floor. There was a small amount of well watered down hand soap the hand washing sink was not very clean. Along the coast to coast path I met three people who asked me where I was going to stay that night they were hoping to camp at the bunk house but it had a private function. One of them ordered a pint on arrival and asked the landlord if he could have a pint of water first. The landlord charged him £9.50 the same price as 2 pints. He then went on to complain when we asked if we could charge our phones. When the other two walkers turned up he charged them £7.50 per person after quoting me £7.00 . The place was very empty only a half dozen or on a Saturday night. I know this pub has a lot of good reviews. But for me it felt hostile unfriendly and poorly run.

Camped here overnight on the Coast to Coast. Good little, flat camping area with dedicated shower and loo (could do with a lick of paint, but did the job). The pub itself is very old - in a good way. I found the landlord and landlady very welcoming and helpful, and there was a nice crowd at the bar. Excellent cooked breakfast, too. Thank you.

We just had the most delicious and wonderful lunch at The Crown Inn at Shap! They opened at noon and because we took a day away from walking the Coast to Coast (lots of rain!) we had time to relax over lunch. We visited with the proprietors while the coal fire was built in the fireplace and ordered homemade tomato soup (for me) and a ham and cheese omelette for my husband, and coffee for us both. Two hours passed (a total surprise!). It was about to storm again, so we closed our bill and walked to our B&B. What a great afternoon. Wonderful people, great homemade food (all of it!! Even the sausage!). They told us about how they invite campers walking the C2C to camp on their property, also. So nice!! Great wholesome, fresh food. Very friendly and full of authentic hospitality!
