Above and Beyond Tours

Despite the POOR weather I had an EXCELLENT tour of the Pultneytown area of Wick today with Angela and Isobel .I want to go back again on a better day ,taking a friend with me , and will try to pass on some of the knowledge / stories I learned today .I would recommend this tour to anybody visiting Wick ( or living in Wick ) .

While staying in Manor House in Thurso to explore the area of our maternal ancestors, we enjoyed two fabulous tours of Caithness. We had an extremely informative walking tour of Thurso with Don. His knowledge and experience in Caithness was only surpassed by his passion for his beloved town and surrounding area on the edge of the sea. We could have spent the whole day with Don because he interwove Caithness tales into the in- depth history that he shared. As a genuine Scot, he peppered his history with lots of humor and a fairy story or two.The next day, we had a driving tour with Angela. She took us to see old stone harbors, surfing beaches, Dunnet Head, a nature preserve, a lighthouse, John O’Groats, and Castle Mey. The rural country side meeting the wide sea was a sight to behold. It is completely understandable that the Queen Mum chose Castle Mey when she wanted to escape London. At my request, Angela even managed to get us up close to Highland Cattle (Hairy Coos), who happen to be her neighbors. Like Don, Angela’s appreciation and love for the Caithness area was palpable. It surely prompted us to be humbled in the presence of this magnificent part of Scotland. One of our fellow travelers was not well on the day of the tour, and chose to stay behind at the inn. On multiple occasions, Angela prompted us to call her and offered to return to Manor House to enable her to join us on the tour after she had rested a bit. Angela has the kind of personality that makes you feel as if you have known her a long time, and you want to continue your friendship. The finale of the outing was a tour of the Wolfburn whisky distillery. Here we met Above and Beyond’s co-owner Isobel. She drove us back to Manor House after our whisky tasting. Like Angela, she exuded warmth and love for her beloved Caithness. There is not question in my mind, if I return to Scotland, I will seek out Above and Beyond Tours to get the local insight into this piece of heaven. Also, I enjoyed the owners and staff so much, I’d enjoy spending more time with them. Kate Barrett USA
