St Margaret's Church

This church dates to the thirteenth century and there was an older building on the same site before that. Regularly open to the public and there are useful boards around the church explaining the history. Lots of medieval graffiti, an exceptional font from the thirteenth century and a medieval wall painting of St. Christopher. A welcoming and beautiful church.

An interesting church in the heart of the village. It has recently benefited from a refurbishment programme, with help from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The church stands on the highest point in the village, along a leafy rural lane, which is along the old Pilgrim's Way from Norwich to Walsingham. It is a large, sprawling church, with several additions. The churchyard is beautifully kept - behind the church there is a 400 year old chestnut tree. Sadly the church was not open when visited. Tantalising glimpses of the interior through the bird screen showed the richness of the stained glass windows and a wall painting. Surprisingly there were no pews; instead rows of modern wooden chairs. There is a tiny car park up a steep track to the east of the church, with a good path leading to the church. Otherwise there is pedestrian access up steps directly from the lane. What a shame the church was locked, with no details of key holders.

Lovely church in centre of Drayton. Very busy church with good community spirit.
