The tiny church of St Mary at Kempley, Gloucestershire built in the early 12th century by Baron Hugh de Lacy. This simple Norman building is adorned with the most outstandingly complete and well-preserved medieval wall paintings in England

A beautiful little church in the countryside with stunning frescos. Incredible that it's free to access. There are a few parking spots in the layby and a few information panels inside the church. Doesn't take long to visit, but well worth stopping if you're in the area!

Very beautiful, quiet setting. Quite hard to reach no public transport available directly to here.

I’m reluctant to share how special this church is because it’s delightfully quiet. English Heritage are responsible for its care, they’ve carefully removed whitewash on the interior walls to reveal the original paintings. The history within is just mind blowing, if that sort of thing is your bag you won’t regret going off the beaten track for a visit. Nb no dogs allowed in this one

Remote, beautiful and outstanding. The church dates from about 1100 and has the best early medeival wall painting in England. The door is original, from 1100,the porch is more modern, dating from about 1400.

St Mary's Church
This outwardly simple Norman church holds inside some of the oldest wall paintings in britain dating back some 900 years, it is the oldest complete set in northern europe.. It also has the oldest timber roof of any building in the UK. With everything going on its easy to miss the architecture such as the exquisite chancel arch or the wooden porch. There is space in the road for around 3 cars , the site is looked after by english heritage and is open till 6pm spring/summer other times its best to check the website. But do go its one of the uk's hidden gems

Outstanding example of a Norman church. Full of wall paintings, very good information explains the history and meaning of the frescoes. Well kept by the friends of the church. Good signage until final point. Easy to drive past. Look for small footpath sign by the gate opposite a small lay-by.

Insane that this place is totally unattended and in the middle of nowhere. Some of the most important and fascinating religious art in Northern Europe and no one comes to see it. It's gorgeous.
