Calm thoughtful curious and engaging - good balance between local history / York-relevant and “great works” of significance in the collection - some well reinterpreted for 21st C thought. Much consideration given to engaging visitors in the debates. And really disabled friendly - lots of places to sit and child friendly with cushions and colouring.

Great public gallery. Not too busy, and friendly helpful staff on reception. Not visited in over 30 years, so I will make sure not to leave it as long next time.Definitely worth a visit

The first floor is paid exhibition but the one I saw this time is quite average. Does not worth my time. Surprisingly the free exhibition upstairs are quite enjoyable, both the oil paintings and the modern art. It’s funny how many weirdly cute animal statues they have which made me laugh. The gift shop is not very nice(also it is just randomly set in the middle of the hall) and the cafe looks ok but I didn’t go so not fair to judge.

Loved this gallery, used to the tate in london, but this was brilliant. Great pottery exhibition with special pieces on loan from private collector Anthony Shaw very unusual. Also saw 2 Lowry paintings I had never seen

I often pop into the Art Gallery when I am in York as I particularly enjoy the ceramics. It’s free and not too big that you feel overwhelmed.Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. There is a gift shop with a lovely selection; something to suit everyone I think. Also, I like the coffee shop which is easily accessible on the ground floor.I thought that I would update this review as I popped into the Art Gallery today. The staff were busy putting together a new exhibition but I wandered around the rest. It is such a lovely gallery with a mix of styles and media; I love the pottery section and also the ceramics in the main section.

Visiting the free part was really great; very friendly staff who helped explain some of the exhibits. Some interesting pieces with well-written histories, specifically from an LGBTQ+ lens. Overall a very enjoyable visit!

Lovely gallery in a beautiful old building - plenty to see and engage with for both 14 and 3 year old, plus adult! The Thursday family art activity was great and such a well stocked room.Free for us too, as York locals. I would definitely recommend!

The gallery is FREE to look around. There is some lovely art work as well as some weird but wonderful pieces too. A few sketchbooks are dotted around too so people can let their creativity flow as they look at the art work.Would definitely recommend if you want a quiet and relaxing few minutes.

A good rainy day activity to do in York. Free entry to the permanent exhibition upstairs. There is a lift and also plenty of seating so it's accessible for most.Plenty of paintings and sculptures from many periods, interesting to read all about them.
