This is a hidden gem unless you're already familiar with the history of Lord Byron. It's incredibly ornate inside, and that's the stuff other than Byron-related. Parking is free for an hour just outside, but if you choose not to pay for additional time, then you will have to keep an eye on the clock. There's so much to see it's easy to forget how long you've been there. Fortunately they also have a tea shop and toilets (very nice, modern toilets). The volunteer guides are very welcoming and knowledgeable. Before you leave, please consider a donation as the upkeep cannot be cheap. If you're non-religious (as I am), consider it a contribution to the upkeep of this beautiful repository of history.

I was baptized at this church in 1943 and now living in America took my children back there in 1986 and the Vicar showed my children the register showing my babtismal information. It was a wonderful experience and my children loved the church. It was wonderful memories as I went to church there for years while at Hucknall National School.

Lord Byron remains a fascinating poet. I thought Jonny Lee Miller captivated him perfectly on video, forever romantic while a most charismatic figure. Byron, Shelley and Keats... but most of all, Byron!

Don't bother going to see Byron's grave- that is their claim to fame, the headstone has been modernised and moved to some 90's monstrosity with no further info absolutely underwhelming

Church of St Mary Magdalene, Hucknall
Large town church famous for housing the Byron family burial vault, which holds the poet and his daughter Ada Lovelace. Also has a large collection of Kempe stained glass. Oldest part of the church is the lowest part of the tower which is late 12th century, the nave is of a similar time. Much of the rest such as the transepts are Victorian additions. A must- see for Byron fans

Beautiful Medieval Church burial place of Lord Byron and loads of local History though the grave yard has been rearranged to give the area a more spacious look but not natural for a church dating back I think to the twelve century.

My visit was long over due and worth the wait. Volunteers great and provided lots of info. Unfortunately the opening hours info was woefully inadequate. While I understand its a working church it is of great cultural and historical importance so info should be accurate and up-to-date. I had travelled from London to visit and couldn't get acssess on tge day I chose. Luckily I was staying more than one day.
