St Mary's Chapel
Wonderful find within walking distance of Jesmond Dene and a short walk to Osborne Road. A peaceful historical haven sat within the residential area of Jesmond. I was fortunate to find a written reference guide at the local library that gave a fantastic overview of the chapels history. Well worth a visit.

St Mary's Chapel
A quiet and ancient pilgrimage spot. Not much to see these days, but you can tell from candles and artefacts that the ruins are still used as a modern-day shrine. Once one of the top 4 pilgrimage destinations in England... If you go, don't forget to to walk up the green lane across the road to visit the atmospheric St Mary's Well.

I touched the walls with my hands and tried to imagine the atmosphere of those days.

St Mary's Chapel
One of the oldest church buildings in Newcastle. In its ruins, but a historical place to visit. In the 12th century, a chapel was constructed in Jesmond after the appearance of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus. This chapel was named St Mary's Chapel. During the middle ages it was a popular pilgrimage centre. The pilgrim street of Newcastle got it's name because the pilgrims to this place stayed there during their journey.

Hardly anything left. Now seems to be a shrine for dead people as there are various photos left there when people are lost. Worth seeing if you are in the Dene. Also you can go round the corner and see saint Mary's well. Hard to park at certain times so go see on a Sunday. Now has a modern addition of a new stained glass window.

Mystical place with pathway nearby to an ancient well.. Ella spotted 3 tiny altars with Angel like artefacts. Proof that she had stumbled upon a fairy village! A great walk and adventure!

Quiet, peaceful place to visit while in town. Follow the trail down the hill to a tunnel under a bridge.

St Mary's Chapel
The ruins of a 12 century chapel, once used by pilgrims. Several walls are still standing, now heavily overgrown with trees. Though it's a ruin, people still create small shrines to loved ones within nooks and crannies in the remains of the walls. There's a modern stained glass memorial window in one of the walls.Entry is through an unlocked gate either from Reid Park Road, or Jesmond Dene Road, where there's a short, but quite steep path up to the ruins.

The history of this ruin is facinating and goes back to the origin of jesmond as a site of pilgrimage thanks to a supposed apparition on the Ouseburn of the Virgin Mary just after the Norman invasion. I've often walked through this to get into the Dene from Osborne Road.It will be of interest to the religious, the amateur historian, and people just walking through it.
