Roundhay Park Geology Trail: 1

Marker 1 for the Roundhay Park Geology Trail.There are 10 checkpoints. The first marker is called ‘An Ice Age’: The lower parts of the castle walls that face downhill are built of rounded boulders of sandstone. They are similar to sandstones near Otley and were carried here by the ice sheets that spread across Britain around 300k years ago. During the most recent glaciation (~15k years ago) ice didn’t reach as far as Roundhay Park.The Roundhay Park Geology Trail was developed by the Friends of Roundhay Park and the Leeds Geological Association in 2006-07. They have produced a leaflet: ‘A Walk Back in Time’.
