I was horrified to see that there is no apostrophe in the heading of Nelson's Prayer on the side of the monument.

Here for a walk and view of new sea defences. Famous round tower adjacent and roofless church. parked nr Nelson statue. Probably the best part of Portsmouth with parents favourite pub the Still & West nearby used to visit when very young in the early 60's

The Nelson Memorial statue on Grand Parade, Old Portsmouth is an excellent tribute to Lord Horatio Viscount Nelson and is in a prominent location that is steeped in history. As mentioned on the plaques on the plinth and lectern, it depicts Nelson in the uniform which he wore when leaving Portsmouth for Trafalgar and the uniform is correct to the smallest detail and the sword is a copy of the one he always wore. While the siting of the statue of Lord Nelson has been the subject of some controversy over many years, Portsmouth was the last English town he ever saw and the statue is said to be several hundred yards from any point on Nelson's last walk. The statue also faces south-west to the place on the beach where he embarked for H.M.S.Victory.

It's a very nice statue.10/10.We literally stood there for seconds commenting on how it was indeed a statue and how it is very statuesque. They've positioned it so that Nelson is looking out to sea; so he could keep watch on people heading out on their holidays and observe the overprivileged trying their hands at sailing by randomly crashing into people anchor lines.

It's Nelson in Old Portsmouth not far from The Pembroke pub what is there not to like. The statue is well kept clean and fortunately not toppled over like so many of England's heroes have been fated with by ignorance of our history. Nelson had a dark past and no saint but without him England would be a very different place.

Not much to see but it looks better now the works to tidy up pavement and seating in the vicinity has completed. The sandy area seems a bit unfinished. This would make a great area for french boules.
