About the Business

Local studies and family history | Newcastle City Council | We regret to inform you that Ancestry is no longer available to access remotely through our Newcastle Libraries subscription. Remote access was a temporary measure which libraries were granted when many had limited physical access due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As the vast majority of public libraries are now open fully again, Ancestry have taken the decision to remove this access. Ancestry is still available to access through PCs at all of our libraries across the City. A great resource for Local Studies and Family History. Everyone is welcome to visit us and look at any of the collection, but, as many items are rare or irreplaceable most of the collection is not on public display. To see anything just make your selection from our catalogues or ask a member of staff.

Newcastle upon Tyne
Well known for the 8 main bridges across river Tyne:Chain Bridge (Blaydon to Scotswood, only toll bridge)Scotswood Bridge (replaced Chain bridge)Redheugh bridge (the one seen today is the third one standing there, the first built 1871)King Edward VII BridgeQueen Elizabeth II BridgeHigh Level BridgeSwing BridgeGeorge V Bridge or Tyne Bridge (the original being in medieval times, washed away by high waters)I believe once the Tyne Bridge was built the plans were taken to Australia to build the Sydney Harbour Bridge.Gateshead Millennium Bridge. There's also a less known bridge, that's the Newburn Bridge which is a road bridge crossing the River Tyne at Newburn in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. It links Newburn, Walbottle and Throckley on the north side of the river with Ryton, Stella and Blaydon on the south side built 21st May 1893.Including rail and footbridges there are 26 bridges over the river Tyne, the above list being the better known. We also have the Tyne Tunnel between the North shore and Jarrow. This was originally a single tunnel, taking traffic both ways. A second was built later so traffic could go one way through one, back through the other. If using Tyne Tunnel regularly it pays to open an account on internet to keep adding money to, that way you can just drive straight through. Gone are the days you have to stop at the toll gates thanks to this system - the CCTV to recognise registration plates has put paid to that. One thing to note - the Geordie accent is very often mistaken for Yorkshire or Scottish but more often Welsh.

A great northern city with wonderful, friendly people, a great shopping centre, a rejuvenated Quayside with fascinating cultural elements and vibrant night life, the Town Moor and, of course, a famous football club.
