CalMac Ferries Millport (Cumbrae)
A fast and efficient ferry runs from Largs and a regular bus service then takes the passengers on to town. A nice trip and a beautiful island.

Even on this short crossing from Largs to Cumbrae Slip, as the safety announcements are made over the tannoy and a jolt signifies we are about to get underway, I always a experience a frisson of excitement at the prospect of being back on Cumbrae once more. It was the main holiday destination of my childhood and holds many happy memories. The ferries run regularly in most weathers. However, IMHO there could be more frequent crossings timetabled on a Saturday morning. Having just missed one, we had to wait a good wee while for the next - but at least there was enough time for bacon rolls from the cafe adjacent to Largs slip and to go buy a newspaper! The only frustration I have about the ferry queue is that some drivers persist in trying to join the queue from the wrong direction (offside), blocking the road in busy periods instead of turning around and queuing along the near side of the road. Sadly, the ferry prices continue to rise year on year. Goodness knows what the cost will rise to in 2023 as a result of the 2022 energy crisis! One day I hope to see a return of ferries to Millport Pier, thereby making the road between the town and the current landing slip much safer and more pleasant for cyclists. And BTW, has any thought been given to making the road round the island one way? Or returning to the days of no visitor vehicles? I notice an increasing number of RV camper vans and people camping out in the beaches beyond Fintry Bay.
