Lisa Bailey - The Sewing Room at The Island

I recently finished the Beginners Sewing course. Lisa is a fantastic teacher, very patient, answered any and all questions we had, and went above and beyond to teach us techniques that we wanted to know more about. I highly recommend her courses!

Learning how to set up the sewing machine , making a cushion pattern and finally completing my first cushion ready to decorate my bedroom! Thanks Lisa, you are an amazing teacher!

I completed the full pattern cutting course with Lisa and I cannot praise her or the course highly enough!The class size was perfect giving Lisa ample time to spend with participants if they needed it. The course participants’ skills in sewing ranged from relative beginner to expert and all needs were catered for. Lisa is an excellent teacher and I feel that she has provided me with skills that I can build on and make any item of clothing I wish. I thoroughly enjoyed every session and will miss my visits to Lisa’s sewing room. I will be back Lisa, to tap into your expertise!

I’ve had a membership at The Sewing Room since 2021 and it’s been wonderful. After spending more time sewing at home during the lockdowns, I started looking to find a studio space in Bristol. I met with Lisa in May 2021 and loved the studio. It’s a huge space, and I’ve loved having access to such a huge cutting table and the overlocker machine in particular. Lisa is super knowledgable and friendly. If you love to sew, or you’re just starting out, you have to check The Sewing Room out. The Island is a special location and it’s great to be surrounded in such a creative environment.

Lisa is amazing! I completed the Beginners Pattern Cutting course and thoroughly enjoyed it. Lisa was so encouraging and taught us so many skills that we'll use forever. The classes were so informative and Lisa was always happy to answer any questions we had to make sure we really understood the theory behind what we were doing.I highly recommend this course if you want to make your own clothes but you're not sure where to start.My experience before the course was some basic sewing, I had tried a few simple patterns but got disheartened when what I made didn't fit me well at all.Now that I have completed the course with Lisa, I have a pattern for a skirt that fits me perfectly and I've learned how I can adapt that one pattern to make an infinite number of designs, shapes, sizes etc.I will definitely be coming back to learn some more and I'm so excited to do so! We learned so much, had a great laugh and met some amazing people too.

Excellent class for all levels! I was completely green and yet I had so much fun and learned so much about pattern cutting and sewing in general, including lots of technical information about different fabrics and threads. I will be returning for another course, Lisa has a wealth of information and experience, as well as so much passion and patience to teach, and she is such a lovely lady :) Hugely recommended to all!

Lisa was absolutely fantastic! I did the 6 week daytime pattern cutting course, which fitted perfectly between school drop-off and pick-up times. Lisa taught me how to draft a skirt block and adapt it to make my own pattern. The way it was taught has left me confident and competent to tackle a bodice on my own.My only complaint was that the venue was cold, but this was January into February so that's probably to be expected.

Before meeting Lisa and being in her classes I knew nothing about sewing or the machinery, I could just about hand sew if I had a hole in my clothes. However Lisa was super helpful, patient and understanding. She taught me how to sew and make my own clothing in just under 3 months! I loved my experience being in her studio, I felt comfortable and had a lot of fun. Would definitely recommend!!

Learning to sew with Lisa was such a joy! I signed up for the 5 week Beginners Sewing course and have come out feeling much more confident. She is very warm and patient and has a genuine enthusiasm to teach and see us progress throughout. Her lessons were planned thoughtfully so we could get the most from the time, and there's a lovely community feel amongst the group, which made it all the more fun. 100% recommend and plan to try her other courses too.

I absolutely loved Lisa’s 5 week beginners course. I can’t believe what we achieved after starting with no experience. The group is small, so Lisa was able to spend time helping all of us individually. The lessons were well planned and the group was really fun. I can definitely recommend this course for anyone with no sewing experience and would love to do another course with Lisa.
