Bishop's Waltham Palace
An interesting Palace ruin with many historical connections. Free car parking for English Heritage.A major bonus here is the Bishops Waltham Museum on site. Only open some afternoons (check website), but has a brilliant & varied little collection . Currently accent is on Sport, and the Curator is to be complemented on the amazing presentation - excellent balance of amuse, entertain & inform. I am tempted to creep back without the wife for a more leisurely peruse.*A tip to the management committee - gently nag English Heritage to remind them what a fine attraction you are to the whole site.

We drove south to Bishop's Waltham Palace, a ruin that was owned by the Bishops of Winchester but, after the Civil War, was looted for building materials. The palace was in another beautiful old town and there were so many amazing houses on display I'm pretty sure the idea of social housing wasn't something they were familiar with. We parked just outside the palace and walked into the grounds. As it was free to enter it was quite busy with families relaxing in the sun and picnicing. English Heritage had several information boards which gave an idea of the building's original grandeur and a brief history. The museum was obviously closed due to covid ....We spent about half an hour wandering around but much of the decoration had gone and the water filled moat was now a dry ditch. It was a large building but difficult to get an impression of its former glory.

A fascinating collection of ruins together with a museum. The guy in the museum was very enthusiastic and friendly - a great source of info. The room itself is magnificent - huge and complex with plenty of info boards dotted around the site. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. It's free as well!

Bishop's Waltham Palace
Gorgeous place, beautiful grounds and some very interesting ruins, as well as the museum available at the weekend from lunchtime. Lots of information about the different parts of the palace and the history of it. Plenty of picnic benches too, perfect for a spot of lunch! Free to enter too, so even more to recommend it!!

A really great experience with being able to park in small car park attached to site. Can download a free audio guide tour for the site via English Heritage website. Wasn't able to go into all the site due to conservation work on the east side of the site.

Free to enter the ruins, with parking on the adjacent station road. This Palace was quite a big concern, as you can tell from the extensive ruins.Currently some parts are under restoration, but all still clearly visible. Information boards detail the Palace, what remains and how it would've looked. From what a read, was a place of some significance. Hence the size of the place.

Nice to wander around but currently some construction fences around some parts. Shame museum wasn't open. Pleasant to end with a stroll through the nearby town centre

Nice place for picnic. It's pretty small and all ruins, its free to enter, there are no facilities ...tiny museum open sometimes. Car park for about 10 carsFree entry although I think they lock the gates overnightNear bishops waltham villageGood for locals to walk / picnic ..kids like to run around / play on the grass / climb in between ruins. We like to visit as this is where we had our wedding photos taken years ago !
