Unfortunately The Old Tollgate have decided to change to Al A Carte menu in the evening. The decor is Old and Shabby. Furniture is very out dated. The atmosphere does not lend itself to expensive dining.4 diners were in our party....Drinks are expensive £11.20 for a double gin and tonic. £6.40 for a pint of beer.Main courses were very small. Pithivier Chicken and Mushroom cold and soggy Dessert was ok. Cheese board... was a lot to be desired at £12.00. Cheese was dry and crackers were limp not crisp. Please Beware service charge 10% £14.80 included on the bill.We have been going to the Tollgate for many years...very disappointed

The look and feel of the restaurant is quite traditional, with the food on offer being somewhat limited. The food tasted okay, with some dishes being better than others. The steak was cooked to my liking, however the triple cooked chips left a lot to be desired. The appetiser and desert were both tasty. Service was a bit slow for the restaurant not being very busy, and it was obvious that the servers were seasonal hires. Overall a decent option in the local area.

It's such a shame that The old Tollgate no longer do the special price carvery. Very expensive for what you get...£8.50 for starters?? £16.50 for the carvery...too much. Also, should really do away with the service charge as there isn't much service, you serve yourself! Beautiful building though.

Visited 6th December at 12:45 for a 13:00 booking. Our group was made up of two couples who have been regulars for many years. Our friends, who had their wedding reception there, sent me a message tonight that they would never return. We had the carvery main and a pudding plus one round of drinks. We were there for over two hours as the service was so slow. The carvery food was lukewarm but despite this was tasty. Had it been just my wife and I I would have asked for it to be heated in the microwave. Our friends drew the coldness of the carvery to the attention of the lady in charge who said “were we not asked if the food was ok shortly after we were served” we said no. She replied Oh! Service continued slowly and we and others in the restaurant waited for over half an hour for the sweet menu and order to be taken. Despite our concerns about the coldness of the main, which could be a potential health issue at a carvery, we decided to have a pudding. Unbelievably when my wife asked if she could have some brandy sauce with her choice she was told “only if you pay for it as it only comes with Christmas pudding”! We are not freeloaders but given the poor main course one would expect a degree of customer service. This was pointed out by our friends and the brandy sauce was forthcoming. The staff were all pleasant but very slow and inattentive. However, I would suggest not enough of them made it more difficult. We waited 15 minutes for the bill after asking each of the 3 waitresses. Neither couple have done this before but we decided to ask for the included service charge to be removed. At this stage things changed, the replacement bill arrived promptly we were thanked for our custom and wished a Happy Christmas. I guess they must have been embarrassed or worried about a negative review. We did have a moment of hilarity when we asked when we might be able to go to the carvery. We were told it won’t be long now and were sorry for the delay but they were busy. A quick reconnoiter of the queue was undertaken to find there was not a single person at the carvery. We pointed this out and were greeted by the customary “oh”! A truly Basil Faulty moment which made us laugh. In summary, prices have increased significantly, portion sizes have decreased, food quality has declined as has the level of service.

We came to the Tollgate for dinner with every intention of booking for Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. No carvery, which they informed us was clearly stated on the website. No it doesn’t. It says about the new A La Carte menu but nothing about the carvery being closes. Service very slow. Meal very expensive for what it was. Won’t be returning and will make alternative plans for Christmas and New Year.

The best carvery lunch that I've had in a very long time. I don't often take pictures of my food, but I did that day. Excellent food and service.

Changed a lot since I last visited, the buffet starters section closed, the staff a little slow, unattentive and disoriented. Lukewarm veg and discoloured Brussel sprouts. The first time I visited (nearly 40 years ago) there was a three month waiting list to get a booking, it was that good and that popular. How things have changed...

Really lovely roast dinner just a shame about the service .. we were only asked if we had been before and shown to our table.. we then had to go and order our drinks at the bar as no one bothered to ask and as its a buffet we didn't rely on anyone to serve us but would have thought we would have been asked if we wanted anymore drinks or asked if we were happy with the food but no one came near us!! Really disappointed especially when we received a charge of 12 and half percent for service charge when we didn't get any service at all absolutely shocking and such a let down when the food was so nice !
