Oxford City Shotokan Karate Club

Fantastic Shotokan Karate Club, led by a highly qualified Sensei that teach in ways that make Karate really enjoyable to learn but, at the same time, make you work hard to achieve results. Highly recommended!

This is a fantastic Shotokan karate club! I have been a member of a number of karate clubs over my time training in the martial arts and never have I been involved with a club that has such a deep sense of community. This is owing to the dedication and encouragement of the clubs chief instructor Sensei Martyn King.I was a member of the club for roughly 18 months where I trained regularly. This was an incredibly supportive club to train with and one where, truly, all the members are fostering the attitude of improvement for the club as a whole. If you are third dan or simply coming for your very first training session their are friendly faces around the club willing to help you out, and maybe one day you will repay the favour with giving them a pointer on the kick they cannot get high enough in one training session down the line.The instructors of the club are highly qualified and have a wealth of experience training absolute beginners to individuals representing the Japan Karate Association England team at international events. Rest assured, you are in safe hands with you training. The club trains threes times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, so you are not short of training opportunities with the club.I can whole heartedly say this was an incredible club and if it were not for moving away from Oxford I would certainly be continuing my training with this wonderful community. If you are looking to continue your karate journey or looking for a place to start, this is the club for you!

Oxford City SKC is a fantastic club. With top class instruction from both our Sensei’s, who are extremely knowledgable, and great at delivering the information needed so you can understand what is required to achieve your goals. As well as pushing you to achieve your best. Producing many black belts, champions and even England squad members the club has really gathered momentum over the last few years! The latest national championships saw 21 competitors attending from Oxford City SKC, attaining many medals across the board, including. bronze, silvers and golds.The club also has a fantastic social side to it, with regular post training get togethers (at the pub of course). Everyone is super supportive and helpful in and out of the dojo. There’s a real team spirit when at events with more experienced members guiding newer members through their day so they can get the most from their experience.Being affiliated to the Japan karate association adds a real air of prestige. The JKA being the longest standing official Shotokan karate body which was established in 1955 with Funakoshi as chief instructor. The JKA was approved as a corporation by the ministry of education in 1958. It is regarded as the gold standard of Shotokan karate. JKA England founded 20 years ago after the passing of Enoeda Sensei and the split between JKA and KUGB ( karate union of Great Britain). The association has gone from strength to strength Headed by Ohta Sensei 7th Dan and a technical committee of highly experienced karateka. Putting on regional and national courses , plus international courses with visiting Japanese instructors twice a year. As well as tournaments, instructor, examiner and referee courses and regular gradings. it really stands up to the reputation of gold standard. I highly recommend joining one of the Oxford City SKC dojos where you can experience the best karate on offer in the area. .

This is a really friendly Karate club, traditional Shotokan Style and members of the Japanese Karate Association England. While Karate is a serious art, the highly qualified Sensei's teach in ways that make Karate really enjoyable to learn and work hard to help you achieve your goals and gradings at your pace. If your looking to try Karate for the first time or even a returning Karate student then this is club to join. Highly recommended. !

Great karate club. The club and Sensei's (yes, two), are very welcoming, with a friendly atmosphere! It's also a JKA approved Shotokan karate club, meaning you're certain to get quality instruction. The lessons are fun and the sensei's methods are highly imaginative yet very instructive. I've noticed the benefits of training here already, with my techniques constantly improving, despite having to un-learn poor habits I've picked up in the past. All for a reasonable price!
