Refused to both take a perfectly valid and Euro note because it had little bit of sellotape to prevent a small rip from ripping in further, claiming it was damaged" AND to alternatively take a bigger note and break it down so that I could only exchange part of that. Ridiculous and in no way customer friendly."

Shockingly racist experience. I went to exchange some dollars to pounds, the woman serving seemed to be Eastern European in her 40s with dark hair, I tell her I agree to the rate and then she asks “where are you from” to which I think she’s trying to make a informal conversation, as that is no way to phrase “I need your ID” so I ask her sorry what do you mean where am I from? She then shrugs and says “you’re not from here” “I need to see your ID” to this I laughed as I found it rather shocking, as did the customers waiting in line behind me. ( I am born and raised in Essex, lived here my whole life, but of brown skin) I pass her my full UK drivers license and she says “no I need UK passport”. M&S could you please tell me since when this is a legal requirement? Absolutely shocking, I was left speechless and the people behind me looked at her in shock. Are these people not trained on what is and isn’t accepted or how to speak to customers? I went down the road to the post office, got my currency exchanged in 2 minutes, and what a surprise, they did not ask me for any ID not tell me “I’m not from here” despite very clearly being a migrant themselves. Definitely will not be coming to any M&S currency exchanges again.
